A Burlington family wants answers after their 16-year-old son died after waiting hours for care at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital last year.
The family is suing the hospital, calling for an inquest, and also wants new legislation to set a limit on how long children can wait to be seen in an emergency room.
Finlay Van Der Werken's mother remembers his death all too well. She remembers the eight hour wait, the lack of care and the helplessness.

Exactly.
What was the cause of death?
Cause of death...
Sososocilized medicine......
Ok thanks
Steady flow of Canadians from Ontario mainly who fly across Lake Erie to Cleveland Clinic and pay long green out of pocket for the .privilege. Don’t want to wait for 6 months for a CT scan.
If you think health care is expensive now, just wait until its free!
American ER’s are full of drug seekers, people who didn’t want to wait to see their own dr for a hangnail, homeless who want a few days rest, families with kids with the sniffles, and chronic pain patients....don’t forget 5he illegals.
I always have a 30 day health travel policy when going to Canada. If something happens to me, medi-flight me the hell out of the country!
I can tell you why the ER’s in Florida are overcrowded. They are slammed with illegals who use the ER as their family doctor. Don’t know if it’s still the case, but a doctor told me years ago that if someone was illegal, they weren’t even allowed to ask for a name. Believe me, when I was there, I was taken in fee first. I had feinted and was unknowingly bleeding internally. But it took a long, long time for them to get to me and I’m lucky to be alive. It’s not that they weren’t moving fast. They were. But the huge number of sniffles and sore throats from illegals concerned they had covid prevented faster service of my life threatening but undiagnosed problem.
Something here would make a father snap big time.
Prayer would have helped this kud far more.
It’s not just illegals.
Medicaid patients who aren’t emergent use the ER because they don’t like the even crappier practioners Medicaid patients often have to use and/or don’t want to have to wait for an appointment.
And, thanks to EMTALA, nobody gets turned away.
People who go to the ER because Urgent Care makes you pay up-front
Unfortunately, that’s very true. We rushed a family member to the ER, only to sit in the waiting room for 12 hours.

Ouch! You beat my personal worst, a measly but still miserable 7 hours.
Seven hours is far too long, too. I myself haven’t had a hospital stay in at least a decade, so I was shocked by the long wait.
