A Burlington family wants answers after their 16-year-old son died after waiting hours for care at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital last year.
The family is suing the hospital, calling for an inquest, and also wants new legislation to set a limit on how long children can wait to be seen in an emergency room.
Finlay Van Der Werken's mother remembers his death all too well. She remembers the eight hour wait, the lack of care and the helplessness.

Oh. Canada.
And Canadians mock our health care.
So children have to be seen before eight hours. Everyone else it is fine. What is the age cutoff?
My wife is Canadian (and now American).
When people learn where she was from, they often say “it must be nice to have free health care.”
She calmly educates them on what “free” really means with taxes but more importantly what socialized health care means as in this episode.
We have first hand stories galore about friends and family that suffer at the expense of “free” health care.
With the long waiting lists for surgery in socialist medicine countries if the patient dies it means a cost savings for the government.
Right wing radio host Bill Cunningham (”Live On Sunday Night” show) had to have exactly the same heart procedure as Mick Jagger. He noted that the immensely wealthy Jagger decided not to have it done in England, or the supposedly health care utopia Cuba. He came to the US, same as Cunningham. Good point.
The priority really should be “people who are dying.” But of course Canada is the land of government encouraged suicide so I doubt they much care.
I’ll take U.S. healthcare over Canada’s any day, but unfortunately we ARE competitive with them in the “absurd ED wait times” category.
More failures from a system created by Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, and Tom Kent that favours clerical and janitorial staff covered by organizations like CUPE and OPSEU more than doctors, nurses, or patients.
ED? Do you mean ER? ED means something else to me. :)
One problem is knowing who is dying. Another problem is a lot of people take their kids in when they have a cold. I never wanted to work in healthcare. I would have second guessed myself all the time.
Had the family smuggled him into the United States illegally he would have gone to the front of the line.
It’s free....and worth every penny.
Is there any information on his actual cause of death? It only says that he was diagnosed with Pneumonia. That does not fit the symptoms nor does it explain his death.
White kid. Thats why. Canaada and the USA want the white kids to die. Period.
“ED? Do you mean ER? ED means something else to me. :)”
From reliantemergencyroom.com:
“The ED is a larger hospital section dedicated to emergency care, featuring multiple specialized rooms and areas for addressing severe symptoms like minor burns and traumatic injuries. On the other hand, the ER is the initial area within the ED where patients are triaged and first assessed.”
Contrary to tv shows. American ER’s are not far behind. Open your eyes.
And yes, I have family in the healthcare field.
In British books and films, people with injuries and sudden illness are often taken to the Emergency Department.
That is If their hospitals/ER do triage.
Many hate our country but they come across our border by the thousands to get our ct scans and MRIs. They would have to wait a year to get it in their country.
My neighbors are Canadian. Their loyalty is to Canada but they get all their medical care in the US. They spend June to November in Canada.
