Parents in the United States have quite a lot of freedom when it comes to naming their children. However, some names are banned across the country and cannot be used officially.

Naming prohibitions aim to stop people from choosing offensive or confusing names. Trademarks are also usually not permitted. Here are some examples of illegal names in the United States:

If you’re considering an alternative name for your baby, it’s best to check a comprehensive list of illegal baby names in the United States. Other restrictions, like banned characters, or length limits, are imposed at a state level.

And what about Dakota, Georgia, Florida, or Carolina?

Can't name a child King in the USA? King was my grandfather's middle name. It was a family name.

Too bad. I always thought "Cosmoline" would be a good name for a girl.

There is no letter in Greek for the H sound, which is written in Greek as a diacritical mark.

Not to mention, “Gehenna” is not a Greek word, but a translation of the Hebrew phrase “Gai Hinnom”, which means the Valley of Hinnom. The place was once also called the Valley of Tophet, where children were sacrificed to false gods; in Jesus’ day, it was where garbage was incinerated and executed criminals’ corpses were unceremoniously cremated.

Thanks for the reminder. I’d read years ago that Gehenna was a real valley with a history of child sacrifice and had become a garbage dump. If I understand it correctly, saying that someone would go to Gehenna in Jesus’ day may or may not have been about the burning of the trash (Hell is hot like the incineration of trash) as much as it was about the disgrace (symbolic as if saying that his bones would be buried in the slummiest of slum places in Israel, because he is Gehenna level slum). Is that right?

I’ve known two women named Wyoming, one of them just turn 80. Her father served on the Wyoming in WWII.

Wyoming "Wyoh" Knott-Davis is a major character in Robert A. Heinlein's 1966 novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Because Wy-Knott?

My favorite Heinlein book! I didn’t mention it because I thought it might be a little too ‘obscure’ for FR. But I guess Knott.
