Agreed. In the IT sector I've worked with many folks from India. They say when they visit home they always pay extra for luggage on the flight to carry an extra suitcase because it's cheaper to buy American goods here and carry with them, even with an extra luggage fee, than it is to buy the same American goods in India.

Because of the tariffs and import restrictions that India has on American goods.

See posts #'s 2 and 5. I'm a free trader too. But my idea of free trade involves the other side dropping their tariffs and import restrictions. What we've had for years with India (and other countries) isn't even close to free trade ... even before Trump. If Trump causes them to lower their tariffs and import restrictions for the first time in practically forever, then it's moving us closer to free trade.

Good if that’s how Trump wants to play it.

And for the Russia kissers who go on about interfering in “sovereign nations” - The United States is a sovereign nation and can do what it wants with tariffs.

Russia thinks it can kill and destroy in other countries. The United States can damn well slap some tariffs on India.

Punitive tariffs used to coerce behavior only works about 25% of the time.

This was for purchase of Russian oil and they’ll get another 10% for BRICS. India can’t continue to serve two masters. Pick a side is what this amounts to. I think he should have cut their visas because it would have punished India and brought MAGA on board for hitting at Russia.

I read that too, and more.

India MUST be allowed to trade with whatever country they choose.

ADDRESSING THREATS TO THE UNITED STATES BY THE GOVERNMENT OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Executive Orders
August 6, 2025

To deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil. In my judgment, imposing tariffs, as described below, in addition to maintaining the other measures taken to address the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, will more effectively deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066.

Sec. 2. Imposition of Tariffs. (a) I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil.

(b) Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent

They can. If they want to trade with Russia they are still allowed to…Trump is NOT obligated to give India a sweetheart deal to trade with the US though

In mid-July, while seated next to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump promised to enforce “very severe” tariffs on Russia if Putin does not enter into a deal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy within 50 days.

“Tariffs at about 100%, you’d call them secondary tariffs,” he had said, implying that nations who trade with Russia will see 100% tariffs slapped on them when trading with the U.S.

He then pushed the date up to within 10 days of July 29, forcing the new deadline for Friday.

But on Tuesday Trump walked back his 100% tariff threat amid tough trade talks with India and China, and said, “I never said a percentage.”

Trump has multiple purposes for tariffs:

China, Canada, Mexico: Fentanyl trafficking
Brazil: Political Lawfare
India: War Profiteering
Canada, Brazil, South Korea, etc.: National Security affected by metal supplies
