The Shroud of Turin was not laid on Jesus' body, scientists reveal

For centuries, devout Christians have flocked to the Italian city of Turin to pay their respects to one of the most famous relics in the world.

The Shroud of Turin is a piece of linen, measuring 14ft 5in by 3ft 7in, that bears a faint image of the front and back of a man.

Many believe that this image was created when Jesus was wrapped in the venerated shroud shortly after his death on the cross 2,000 years ago.

However, according to a new study, the Shroud of Turin was never laid on Jesus' body.

Brazilian 3D designer and researcher Cicero Moraes, an expert in reconstructing historical faces, says that the shroud is nothing more than a 'masterpiece of Christian art'.

Mr Moraes used digital modelling software to examine how cloth drapes over the human body compared to a low, flat sculpture of a body.

These results, published this week in the journal Archaeometry, show that the shroud's distinctive pattern could only have been produced by a sculpture.

In his paper, Mr Moraes wrote: 'The Shroud's image is more consistent with an artistic low-relief representation than with the direct imprint of a real human body.'

New analysis shows that the images on the Shroud of Turin (centre) could only have been produced by laying the cloth over a flat sculpture (right) rather than over a human body (left)

No one is worshiping the Shroud. It is not idolatry. There is nothing wrong with paintings/art on or in Bibles, either.

He was saved because I weaved that cloth. No, he was saved because I saved that cloth in a great place. Nonsense, he was saved because I discovered it. Ridiculous, he was saved because I showed it to him.

Who are you to say how another man is lead to Christ? Who are you to say what will open a man's heart and mind to Christ?

If I lead a man to the faith is that invalid?

If a man reads the word and his heart is opened to the faith is it somehow not the Bible that opened his heart?

Is evangelism invalid? Are we denying the Holy Spirt by evangelizing?

Is is somehow wrong that a man's heart is opened to Christ by a relic?

Sorry, you arguments make no sense.

He was saved because I weaved that cloth. No, he was saved because I saved that cloth in a great place.

St. John devoted 4 lines of his gospel to the shroud and face cloth. All of the gospels mention the shroud. Obviously the authors place some importance on the shroud.

The paths to the faith are many, why do you argue that a man can not be led by the Holy Spirit through the Shroud of Turin or other relic?

Do you have special insight in to the mind of God?

I think it is obvious that God intended the Shroud to have importance in the future because the Angel of the Lord saw fit to neatly fold it. I was not cast to the floor or torn to bits.

If God treated the Shroud with care maybe we should at ponder what importance it might have.

Ah. This genius is a self-taught facial reconstruction artist using free, 3D software. Of course that makes him an expert in miracles.

... “ Based in the central Brazilian city of Sinop, Cícero Moraes is a self-taught leader in the cutting-edge field of historical facial reconstruction. With a robust background in 3D computer graphics and a personal mission sparked by a near-death experience, Moraes has dedicated himself to creating facial reconstructions using 3D software and printing technology, emphasizing the use of free software” ....

Just trying to stir the pot and get his name in public.

Ignore it.

BINGO
Why must we believe some shroud is the real thing to accept and believe Jesus? People also say the pyramids were build by aliens and no humans could move rocks like that. And people do. People say stonehenge had to be made by aliens and no humans could move THOSE stones until some guy does it on his driveway using simple water counterweights and wood blocks.
The thing that stands out for me is that it is in one piece. Had it been ‘real’ from 2000 years ago it would have been shredded by scavengers and followers and every cathedral in the world would claim to have their own piece of “the one true shroud” to march around in their relic chests. How many “true pieces of the cross” are out there? How many bits of bone are “the one true piece” of this or that saint. It is earthly stuff.

Scammers and hoaxers have existed throughout history.

One of the biggest and most ignored and never mentioned is: If the Shroud was a fake or a Medieval painting, why wasn’t it signed by the originator? All paintings, murals, mosaics were signed or had the person’s name or initials on it somewhere. The Shroud? Nothing.

Well, I don’t think that’s terribly important. Lots of people believe that it was deliberately created as a fraud, and if that were the case I doubt the ‘artist’ would expose himself.

But there is just too much inexplicable about this for me to reject it out of hand.

If the Shroud were being recreated in a lab by scientists and technicians that would, indeed, e the conclusion. However . . .

One cannot logically deduce that conclusion without first showing reproducibly how the image was created.

The Catholic church has never pronounced upon whether or not the Shroud is ‘real’:

“The Church permits the faithful to come to their own conclusions on the shroud. The faithful are permitted to venerate the shroud, study its details and view it when it is displayed. However, the shroud is not part of the deposit of faith in which Catholics must give full assent of the mind and will. Our faith in the Resurrection does not depend on the authenticity of the shroud but on the testimony of the apostles.”

It was custom. Read John 20:1-7. It seems to speak of the Sudarium as separate from the winding cloth.

The shroud possibly is an historical artifact. That makes it interesting, just like all of the other things we have from the times that preceded us. The Bible does not give any credibility to the notion of such things being sacred or necessary for Salvation. So, they are of no more importance than anything else founs in a museum.

Of course, I'm Lutheran and I suspect all of you are Catholic. Catholics got to have their man-made priest-things.

Well, enjoy your trinkets.

Something doesn’t have to be necessary to salvation to be worthy of great interest and to carry great importance for a variety of reasons.

I find your responses simplistic if not simple minded; and a little insulting. People are different, and you’re just one of them. You only seem able to view a subject from your own perspective.
