A South Carolina woman faces felony charges after authorities say she gave birth to a stillborn baby and disposed of the remains of the baby in a hotel dumpster
It’s an act pro-life advocates describe as a tragic reflection of a culture that fails to honor the dignity of unborn children.
Byresha Asia Williams, 31, was arrested and charged with desecration of human remains, a felony carrying a potential sentence of one to 10 years in prison, according to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred between June 17 and 18, when Williams allegedly gave birth to a stillborn baby and placed the remains in a plastic bag before discarding them in a dumpster at the Super 8 Hotel on West Palmetto Street near Interstate 95 in Florence, deputies said.
Williams was booked into the Florence County Detention Center and is awaiting a bond hearing, the sheriff’s office reported.
The case underscores the need for greater support for women facing pregnancy loss and a societal shift toward recognizing the humanity of all children, including those lost to stillbirth.
The case echoes other incidents where women have faced legal consequences for carelessly throwing away their babies.
In 2018, a Lexington, South Carolina, woman, Brennan Geller, pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse after placing her newborn in a trash bag, an act authorities discovered after she sought medical treatment for blood loss. South Carolina’s Daniel’s Law, designed to prevent such tragedies, allows mothers to surrender unharmed newborns at designated locations without legal repercussions, but pro-life advocates argue more education and resources are needed to ensure women know their options.
The pro-life movement points to pregnancy resource centers as critical for offering counseling and practical help to women in crisis.
Williams’ case remains under investigation, with authorities providing no further details on the circumstances of the stillbirth or Williams’ state of mind. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has not commented on whether additional charges are pending.

I would think most of them might have buried the child either in a cemetery or in the back yard.
Did stories like this every make the news?
Yes the occasional story.
“Byresha”….
Yup.
Home Burial by Robert Frost was his poem about a mourning couple and their child. A professor said such things were common in rural areas in past times in America.
He and his wife Elinor had a child die at one day old.
Elinor Bettina Frost (1907 - 1907).
Born 1907 in Derry, Rockingham, New Hampshire.
Died 1907 age one day.
I once tried to search the Dragnet episode of the baby girl infant in a garbage can who was barely alive and then survived.
On the way I had to push away a number of stories of recent and older news stories such as a Detroit woman putting her newborn in a dumpster and more.
I had not known this was a rather common event. Search says “multiple instances”.
As Christian authors say “This is a Fallen World.”
By the way “Dragnet 1967” Juvenile: DR-35 (Season 3, Episode 25, 1969) - Four day old infant.
Woman of color!
Oh come on, its what any modern mother would do. “Dad” (and I say that in quotes because she probably doesn’t know exactly who the dad is) is probably in prison or working to get there, so obviously he couldn’t do it.
““Byresha”….
Yup.”
Rhymes with, “Bi-racial,” and she kind of looks like it.
LOOKS CLOSER TO 13 THAN TO 31.
Abortion or abortion pill ???
That is so sad.
My grandmother lost her middle child only a few days after it birth, around 1910. She still cried over that baby in her nineties.
No one had babies at home then. Maybe the 40’s.
It would have been illegal as well to dispose of the corpse.
Its likely this baby wasn’t still born.
Anyone who could throw their dead baby out would kill it.
It’s them again, Yogi.
Good question.
Red dye is harmful.
Indeed.
The name alone pegged my "Yogi-Meter".
I guess this means that bryesha is out of the running for “Mother of the Year”.
It is surprising. It’s typically white woman who do this.
