American tomato farmers say business is booming after Trump's tariffs on Mexican produce đź’Ş

Would you look at that? Trump's tariffs are having their intended impact for American businesses. At least for now.

In Alabama, farmers are showing their gratitude for President Trump's tariffs which are making business boom in the produce world.

It's only been two days now and we've actually had a lot more calls of people having interest in doing business and the price hasn't even changed.

So, this leveling the playing field with international trade actually ... levels the playing field? A 17% tariff was all it took??

From NBC 13 in Birmingham:

Many are concerned this will mean higher prices on tomatoes and products like salsa made from tomatoes. [Blake] Thaxton [the Alabama Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association] said when you consider U.S. farmers pay their workers 10 times more per hour than workers in Mexico make, there may be a price increase, but he doesn't think it'll be a huge jump ...

Thaxton said, 'Food security is national security, and we need to be able to produce our own food here in the United States.'

This is such a salient point: America doesn't need to rely on other countries' food.

Nothing I hate worse than going to a grocery store to buy produce, and finding the only thing available is from Mexico. I won’t buy it, but will head to another store to find what I want.

IMNSHO, some of the best (if not the best) tomatoes in the country are grown right here in Hanover County Virginia. The growing conditions are perfect for them. I look forward to them every year. Any other tomatoes just don’t have any flavor. Too bad they aren’t available all year.

If I were an American tomato farmer I wouldn’t say that too loud. The gay, “hispanic” Senators who have spent many a lonely night with deported MS-13 killers will be putting out a hit on the farmers by the undocumented, Illegal aliens. They’ll end up shot in the face like the New York CBP.

My two favorites were Black Cherry and Krim...an extraordinary Heirloom.

End of the season picking...as soon as they start to turn pink, pick them and put them in a cardboard box with newspaper. I control the ripening by adding a banana or two to a box. I had tomatoes all the way to December and I'm in Upstate NY.

Open and free market capitalism is the best way to go. Unfortunately, you only hose yourself when everyone else is cheating. Obviously, we have been getting humped by everyone for some time.

Sure they do. All it took was for us to pay a 17% increase in prices to support them. Nope, no inflation in that move.

Inflation is produced in only one place, Washington DC. Stop printing and spending money FEDGOV!

Good news! Love me a good tomato sandwich. Now, if the coffee prices would just go down.

The other good thing about buying maters from Alabama is that we are not buying them from a hostile foreign country like California. Plus they are less likely to be fertilized with human kaka.

“Maybe these tariffs can help them reorganize back to greater profitability again.”

Not until they can refill their factories with illegals that get busted by the feds.

The tomatoes from Mexico are just fodder with zero flavor.

That's basically what Wal-Mart and the other big chains want-- they ship better and have longer shelf life.

Here in SW Pennsylvania, you have to go to an Amish market or independent fruit stand to get the quality peaches and apples we actually grow locally. They cost a little more due to the shelf life and shipping issues.

But at least we have that choice!

I’ll try that, I just put a well developed Cherokee Purple and well developed Solar Flare in the ground about a week ago to see what avoiding July and August will do for September and October, I have the early plantings of Early girl and Celebrity, the middle plantings (July 4th) of (all well-developed) a Cherokee, a Solar flare, and a Heatwave, and then these.

We have a huge hydroponic operation nearby. Rumor was that it was in anticipation of growing marijuana but they are making a killing on tomatoes.

Here is Upstate...it was all about Frost Date...so we watched carefully. I know I picked more than 200 Black Cherry tomatoes....and maybe 50 to 60 Krim for my boxes. I dated them and ripened them one by one.

They need to have some pink...

America needs to recover it’s farmland and grow more produce and meat. If it takes away from Kalifornia, the better I like it.

"Some words are derived from old English spellings, especially foods from the old English-speaking world (i.e. potatoes). Some are basically transplanted words from Spanish, especially foods from central and South America (i.e. avocados)."

But...tomatoes and potatoes are from Central and South America.
