Nearly one in four infants lacks enough healthy gut bacteria essential for training their immune systems, putting them at greater risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as allergies, asthma, and eczema by age 2.
Bifidobacteria are among the first group of good bacteria to colonize the human gut, and their presence has been linked to positive health outcomes for the host, including protection against metabolic diseases, gastrointestinal tract infections, and inflammation.
A recent study analyzed the gut microbiomes of 412 infants, selected to represent the diverse demographics of the U.S, and found a widespread deficit of Bifidobacteria in infants. Long-term health data from the infants suggested that a lack of detectable Bifidobacteria in infants may contribute to the development of atopy, a genetic predisposition to developing allergic diseases.
Emerging data suggests that the rise in such NCDs actually begins during the first 1,000 days of a child's life—inside the mother's womb and through the first two years of life.
To fill in the gap, the researchers designed the My Baby Biome study, a seven-year longitudinal investigation that involved nationally representative data of both the infant gut microbiome and the compounds produced by the metabolic activities of the microbes.
Data analysis revealed that 25% of U.S. infants between 1 and 3 months of age were deficient in Bifidobacterium, and the deficiency was more pronounced in C-section births (35%) than in vaginal births (19%). In C-section infants, the beneficial bacteria were often replaced by potentially pathogenic bacteria that are known to use up human milk oligosaccharides, components in breast milk that shape the infant gut microbiome.
They also found that microbiomes rich in Bifidobacterium had fewer antimicrobial-resistant and disease-causing genes, along with more beneficial metabolic profiles.

Yep. C-sections and infant formula are the main culprits.
Yogurt and breast milk...
Study is 412 infants.....much to small to derive such a conclusion....
I think kids are kept too clean too. Hand sanitizers, wipes on everything, no roughhousing in the grass, no playing in mud, no pets, sterilized environments. They never have a chance to build up an immune system.
Maybe this isn’t true, but I read it several years ago. I’ve never had kids, so am definitely not an expert.
I read that babies born naturally are healthier than babies via c-sections. The reason is that there’s something “down there” where the mother’s poop has been. And during birth that gives the baby some kind of immunity or something.
Apologies if not true or too gross.
Too clean is my thought too. Kids don’t wipe out on their bikes in the dirt and streets like we did when we were young. When my son joined the army he heard a lot of the young recruits had such low bone density that they got hurt passing basic training. Grew up on their butts playing video games and never developed bone strength.
We have a friend who has to have a c-section because she had to have one with her first baby. They’re going to deliver him by the end of the week, because he’s already 8 pounds, and mama’s not a big person and she’s been miserable for weeks. My daughter had to have a c-section because her baby had a shortened umbilical cord and the cord was wrapped around his neck. He has had several respiratory flare ups and is deaf in one ear, probably from laying on that side in the womb for 9 months. Thankfully, there’s nothing wrong with his brain; he’s smart as a whip! Usually, c sections are done because it’s required.
The question is whether it would work for adults.
When I was a kid with those problems, NOBODY was talking about the gut or probiotics.
And C-sections often can’t be helped.
Needing to use formula rarely can’t be helped. There are the occasional reports of women who, for some reason, cannot produce breast milk, which must be heart breaking for them, because they clearly want to and tried before they realized they can’t.
Yup.
A adequate exposure to dirt and germs is critical to training the immune system properly.
THE NEVER ENDING “VACCINATIONS” A KID GETS ARE NOT HELPFUL
That’s correct. And the first breast milk is called colostrum. Colostrum has many prebiotic and immune system benefits. Children not fed mother’s milk have more health problems. Some even think autism is correlated with children not having been breast fed. So natural birth and natural nutrition has huge benefits for the future health of babies.
I also wonder if the probiotic bugs don’t need occasional refreshing, especially after a course of antibiotics. I take kefir regularly, seems to help.
I always buy only top-quality infant guts, loaded with the "right" kind of bacteria.
A little vinegar and pepper and - Voilà!
Regards,
“And the first breast milk is called colostrum.”
Right. We saw an OLD Law & Order episode just last night where the colostrum was discussed at length.
So what’s the solution?
In this case, there is only insight as to how to prevent it.
If your child needed a C-section and was given antibiotics in the first two years of life, they are at a higher risk for permanently having issues, due to genetic changes made by age two.
My GI doctor told me that probiotics can help but need to be kept up because if you don’t, your system will eventually revert to it’s original state, (I’m guessing probably what you developed as a baby)
