Trump Claims Coca‑Cola Agrees to Sugar Switch — Company Responds
Independent Journal Review ^ | July 17, 2025 | Sandra Rhodes

The “Cola Wars” has apparently hit the White House.

President Donald Trump said he suggested to Coca-Cola to change its formula use real cane sugar in Coke in the U.S.

However, the company is mum so far, per the Associated Press.

Other markets, such as Mexico and Australia, use real cane sugar. The U.S. production uses high-fructose corn syrup.

“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” Trump wrote on social media. “I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”

Corn Refiners Association President and CEO John Bode said the switch would not make sense.

“Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar doesn’t make sense,” Bode said in a statement, per AP. “President Trump stands for American manufacturing jobs, American farmers, and reducing the trade deficit. Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit.”

The company responded by expressing its gratitude for Trump’s interest in the product.

A spokesperson for Coca-Cola Co. said details on any offerings would be announced soon. The spokesperson did not elaborate on the statement.

In the end, any change would not affect Diet Coke — Trump’s drink of choice. That is sweetened with aspartame.

The irony.....

Exactly what nutritional benefit does Coke have????

I sure hope this guy didn't say that with a straight face.

Mr mm drinks flavored, unsweetened sparking water.

Once you get used to the lack of sugar, it’s great.

Some folks can make their Coca Cola a lot healthier by not pouring so much rum into it.

Do you really think Coca Cola Company cares about the health of its consumers?

I’ve been drinking flavored and unflavored club soda for years… I probably drink four regular sodas a year tops. Now if I could just quit drinking beer…even the “low carb” crap keeps weight on

I felt better after cutting out soda than I did after I quit my pack-a-day 15 year smoking habit.

Clean and sober >39 years, I splurge on a Diet Coke once in a while.

High fructose corn syrup is gross. Makes you fat.

I've often said that "free refills" is what gives so many American's their spare tires.

“The headline says the company responded???”

What I suspect happened was that Trump or someone else high up, had a conversation with Coke on the topic, but understandably didn’t get a commitment from Coke. Trump, knowing that HFCS is total crap and understanding that Americans know the same, then announced it for them, knowing that the company would then be pressured to make the switch.

Man, if I had to give up chocolate there would be blood in the streets. Alcohol, caffeine, carbonated drinks, these are all negotiable. But not chocolate.
