"Lanfray had drunk his way through the previous day, beginning near dawn with a shot of absinthe diluted in water. A second absinthe shot soon followed."

Thank you very much and God bless you.
I love Absinthe. IMHO, it produces a different kind of buzz than most alcohol. Much mellower and overall better.
The absinthe sold today is not the same as what was available in the 1800s.

Oh. So, Absinthe has nothing to do with that notorious
“Devil in A Blue Dress” I’ve been warned about.
Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.
Thujone!😎
Popular media has been trying to resurrect this low-grade intoxicant of dubious actual effects lately since it fell out of vogue in the 19’th century.
The green fairy.
Makes a nice Sazerac
EEK! A Mouse!
Bill still hasn’t explained the story behind that very odd portrait. Maybe he lost a bet.
Absinthe was banned in the US in 1912, not because of Prohibition, but due to concerns about its potential psychoactive effects, particularly the presence of thujone, a chemical found in grand wormwood. While it was believed to cause hallucinations and other dangerous effects, these claims were largely unfounded and fueled by misinformation and the Temperance movement. Some conjecture I think.
About a million years ago, I tasted absynthe at The Old Absynthe House in New Orleans. As I recall, I didn’t like it.
Going to NOLA later this year to show my daughter the wonderful city where my grandmother ran a small hotel. We’ll give it a try. Thanks for the reminder.
I went to this place in Paris on the way from a visit to the cemetery. It was mid afternoon and I was only one in the place.Did the fountain. It was a trip but saw no green fairies.

Owner died and is now closed
It’s not the absynthe of old anymore than today’s Coca-Cola is the same that the Rough Riders enjoyed with a splash of rum in 1898.
D@mn. Not even in NOLA?
The taste is not the greatest, but far from the worst. I typically mix it with some kind of juice. I have also observed that the green color freaks some people out. But, like I said, it has a very unique buzz which I do enjoy.
