PORTALES, N.M.— William and Daynnely Carrillo got married on May 25, and while the wedding day was just how they wanted it to be, they had a little surprise in the mix of it all.
Bad weather arose, and a tornado was spotted in the distance from their wedding venue. Instead of finding shelter, the couple took advantage of the moment by taking wedding photos in front of it.
“The ceremony was going to be outside and then everything else was going to be inside. So, it was going to be four o’clock and then basically throughout the whole ceremony we were getting married, we set our vows and then it just switched,” Daynnely said. “It just got windy and then it just got cloudy. It just instantly happened, and we just said, ‘OK, let’s go take pictures.'”
The photographer, Chesnea Clemmons, discussed taking the photos during the storm.
“It’s just an iconic moment that I mean you were never going to get that opportunity again, and I mean being the Plains we all are pretty weather aware and so we knew like it wasn’t close enough for us to be in complete danger,” Clemmons said.
Clemmons described how viral the photo had gotten once she posted it.
“I’ve had phone calls and interviews and CBS News and Weather Channel and AccuWeather and everybody’s been calling. It’s just been a crazy whirlwind for the last about 48 hours,” Clemmons said.
There’s this on the net about it. Pretty cool and I do believe it’s real and one can never be too sure these days.
“One of the most famous tornado pictures in history was snapped on this day in 1989.
Marilee Thomas of Beaver City, Nebraska, took this picture of her daughter in front of a tornado in Furnas County. The tornado produced minor damage to farms, and the “tornado girl” photo went on to win second place in a national contest.”
shes got enough counterweight for both of them... np...
Oh, he’s a sturdy lad for sure ... they’re well matched.
He got him a big’un for sure.
Wait, isn’t a gentleman supposed to remove his hat before kissing a lady?
The wind will remove hat soon enough
I would love to get a wedding shot in front of a nuke blast.
Their wedding night might produce an earthquake
I guess they were planning on a whirlwind honeymoon?
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.
Yep. Another tidbit: a girl/woman taking your cowboy hat and putting it on herself is a sign of affection. My wife took mine when I was 16 and out it on...and we've been together ever since.
You win !
Long time ago.
(Bet you can pick up a section of land pretty cheaply! Not sure about the water though!)
That newscaster was a hefty heifer too.
IN here. We had two, three tornado warnings this spring.
I’m digging a hole before it freezes this fall.
My grandparents in OK had one that served as a preserves, root cellar and twister shelter.
Tornados are land sharks that come looking for you.
they may have to put a cinder block or 2 under the middle of the bed!
That’s a great pic!
She’s not fat.
Thank you! :)
