NATIONAL GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY
On June 11 we celebrate the delicious food holiday known as National German Chocolate Cake Day! We can't think of a better way to learn about a cake with American roots and get our chocolate fix for the day at the same time!
#GermanChocolateCakeDay
Although the name may sound like the cake originated in Germany, German chocolate cake did not. In fact, the cake's roots can be traced back to 1852 when American Sam German made a type of dark baking chocolate for the American Baker’s Chocolate Company. Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate’s brand was named in honor of Sam German.
Over 100 years later in 1957, a recipe for “German’s Chocolate Cake” appeared as the Recipe of the Day in the Dallas Morning Star. This recipe, created by Mrs. George Clay, used Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate. Obviously, it became quite popular. During this time, General Foods owned Baker’s brand and distributed Mrs. Clay's recipe to other newspapers around the country. The current name of German Chocolate Cake, as we know it today, came to be as publications started dropping the 's.

CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY PING!!!...............................
When I was a kid my mom would make that for my birthday.....now that’s true love. 😏
Well, that’s interesting!
It is the best cake there is!.............................
Where—here or in Germany?
My Mother also would make that for my Birthday.
She would substitute almonds for the walnuts in the frosting.
Bring me some GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE at once!!
Germans don’t know what a GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE is.............
Ah, I see:
“Originating in the United States, it was named after English-American chocolate maker Samuel German”
I’d eat German Chocolate Cake on a flip flop. 😁
We used to buy Pepperidge Farm frozen German Chocolate Cake in our younger days....................
Oh yes...had Pepperidge Farms many times......my other crack addiction. 😏
A special treat are German Chocolate Cupcakes with that Pecan Frosting. Yum! I have never made a German Chocolate Cake.
My birthday is in July so Mom always made an Angel Food Cake for me and we had it as a sponge cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.
Dad & Sis’ birthdays are one day apart, and they both liked Chocolate Cake with Nuts & Cherries with GOBS of chocolate frosting.
My step-son liked ‘Queen of Sheba’ cake for his birthday, so he got that but with rum flavoring - not the real stuff. ;)

When I was a kid, the “nice restaurants” often served Pepperidge Farm chocolate cake (their plain chocolate layer cake). I loved that stuff. As for German chocolate cake, I always wanted to like it, but I just hate the texture of the coconut. I’m not much of a coconut fan in general because of its texture.
