President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he was reinstating the names of seven military bases that had been named after Confederates, including their leader, Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Trump made the announcement during his trip to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, which had briefly taken on the name 'Fort Liberty.'
In February, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that it would be riverted to Fort Bragg, but would be named after a World War II hero, not the problematic Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg.
'For a little breaking news, we are also going to be restoring the names to Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort A.P. Hill and Fort Robert E. Lee,' Trump told the crowd Tuesday.
'We won a lot of battles out of those forts,' he continued. 'And I'm superstitious, I like to keep it going right? I'm very superstitious, we want to keep it going, so that's a big story, I just announced it today to you for the first time.'
Trump said he was pressured to wait and make the announcement during Saturday's parade marking his birthday and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Army.
'I can't wait!' he said at Fort Bragg. 'I've got to talk to my friends here today.'
The president's move makes good on a campaign promise he made, not in 2024, but in 2020.

They make it sound like he’s giving them new names, not restoring the names they had.
More dishonest MSM reporting.
I LOVE NBF...check out his exploits after Shiloh, at the Battle of the Fallen Timbers...he was intrepid!
Your post 16 attempted to make some kind of regional moral hay by playing the old tapes about “slavery advocating. insurrectionist, rebellious Confederate past.”
My response is that both the CSA Constitution and the USA Constitution were pro-slavery; and that President Lincoln took an oath (twice as president) to uphold and defend the pro-slavery U.S. Constitution. I could have added that Lincoln, as Congressman, could have introduced a constitutional amendment to abolish slavery peacefully. And I could have added that President Lincoln could have advocated for such a Constitutional amendment in 1861 to abolish slavery peacefully instead of “fighting to free the slaves”, if - in fact - that is what he did.
As an aside, the U.S. Constitution’s Fugitive Slave Clause did not “allow” for the return of slaves; the language was “shall”.
Slavery was enshrined in the U.S. Constitution several times times, but not until Article I.
Fightin’ Joe Wheeler and Fitzhugh Lee.
Future president Teddy Roosevelt reported to Wheeler if I remember.
hardly a shock - he said he was going to do this at least 100 times.
He set the bar high, in my family growing up in the south, we were taught to be gentlemen at all times. Typical rule was “ gentlemen don’t start fights, but they finish brawls”. I still open doors for others, and allow them through first. It’s amazing to watch the reactions of people when you are polite.
It was a family fight, and those are always the worst. But even with a great grandfather who wore blue and fought under Uncle Billy (W.T. Sherman), I recognize and respect the valor of the Americans he fought. The Democrats who tried to remove these names from history were canceling their political ancestors in imitation of their true godfather, Josef Stalin.
‘it would be riverted to Fort Bragg’
Must be Brit spelling.
I was at Fort Bragg today... last week all the junk that had Fort Liberty on it was being sold for 75% at the PX.
It was a fine day to be an American, American Soldier, as well as a retired American Soldier and retired foreign service.
Trump gut punched the left hard.
What’s with the title the author came up with? He’s been saying he’d do this for months/years. It’s hardly a shock.
That is correct. I heard they renamed the Havey Milk (c*m Bucket) ship.

Got ‘em on the run now! Maybe this will put a halt to further attempts to erase history with suppression, lies and destruction of monuments.
The story goes that when the need for the bases was recognized they looked for places where training would not be interrupted so much by weather, the South was obvious. To help overcome resistance they bases were named after Confederates.
