President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he was reinstating the names of seven military bases that had been named after Confederates, including their leader, Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Trump made the announcement during his trip to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, which had briefly taken on the name 'Fort Liberty.'
In February, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that it would be riverted to Fort Bragg, but would be named after a World War II hero, not the problematic Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg.
'For a little breaking news, we are also going to be restoring the names to Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort A.P. Hill and Fort Robert E. Lee,' Trump told the crowd Tuesday.
'We won a lot of battles out of those forts,' he continued. 'And I'm superstitious, I like to keep it going right? I'm very superstitious, we want to keep it going, so that's a big story, I just announced it today to you for the first time.'
Trump said he was pressured to wait and make the announcement during Saturday's parade marking his birthday and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Army.
'I can't wait!' he said at Fort Bragg. 'I've got to talk to my friends here today.'
The president's move makes good on a campaign promise he made, not in 2024, but in 2020.

He’s returning their original names taken away by an autopen.
They were Americans too.
So I supposed to be shocked about Trump doing what he said he would do?
Which begs the question of who was behind the autopen?
I voted for this.
Lincoln himself buried that hatchet.
Trump is merely burying it again.
Robert E.Lee did more to insure post civil war peace than any other person. He was the man who told the former confederate soldiers to stand down and not to engage in insurrection. They mostly followed his orders.
After the war Robert E. Lee urged his troops to return home and focus on rebuilding their communities. He emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation, and believed it was the duty of every citizen to aid in the restoration of the country. He recognized the suffering and exhaustion of his soldiers and expressed compassion for their situation
Those who are so upset about this just happen to reside on the LEFT of the political spectrum.
Wonder why?
Most of the men after whom these bases were named fought valiantly, even though they were on the “wrong” side. I have no problem with keeping the original names.
Name them all “Fort Death to Communism ##” with just a number to uniquely identify them. It would drive democRATs insan(er).
👍
From a Yankee I say, thank you sir!
That is so true...let buried hatchets stay buried.
Go all in. Let’s name bases for Gen. Stand Watie and Gen. Nate Forrest.
“Those who are so upset about this just happen to reside on the LEFT of the political spectrum.”
“Wonder why?”
Because the Democrat/Progressive left are in full cover-up mode over their slavery advocating. insurrectionist, rebellious Confederate past. They are in full cover up mode about their history, and they do not wish to have tangible reminders of that reality.
Good!
Robert E Lee was the commandant of West Point, and a Mexican War hero!
“He was the man who told the former confederate soldiers to stand down and not to engage in insurrection. They mostly followed his orders.”
It was an attempt to secede...just like we did in the revolutionary war. Noble causes if ever there were.
This is good.
It’s far past time for the political elites to stop treating southerners as a conquered people, undeserving of dignity or historical recognition.
