Three teens have been arrested for trashing and setting fire to the beloved historic Sleepy Hollow lighthouse in a “heartbreaking” attack just a year after its multimillion-dollar renovation, according to officials.
Baby-faced firebugs Elvin Ayavaca, 18, of White Plains and Richard Barrero, 19, of Harrison, along with an unidentified 17-year-old, caused at least $100,000 in damage to the charming 142-year-old landmark, the Westchester County Police said in a press release Friday.
The trio was charged with arson, burglary and criminal mischief after getting caught on camera strolling over a bridge leading to the lighthouse Saturday, according to police. A fourth suspect is still at large.
The young suspects are accused of hopping a locked fence at the “cherished” lighthouse at around 3:30 a.m., then smashing a window and climbing into the towering red-and-white structure.
Once inside, they allegedly lit parts of the bottom floor, which is set up as a museum, and damaged antique furniture and at least 35 precious books.
The vandalism came a year after the county unveiled a $3.4 million renovation of the lighthouse’s interior, including a restoration of its historic spotlight. The destruction sparked local outrage and plenty of police tips, Westchester County Police Public Information Officer Kieran O’Leary told The Post on Wednesday.
The teens were arraigned in Sleepy Hollow Village Court on the felony charges, according to police, who said they aren’t naming the 17-year-old because he’s a juvenile.

Thanks. Sarcasm isn’t necessary here. See my reply post #20.
Agreed! It was a rude, boorish, ad hominem remark and totally uncalled for.
Don’t let that get you down, OD. We are glad you joined in. Some people will be jerks for no reason. Your comment was fine.
Thanks to you as well. “Hominem” I had to look that one up, and imho I think I have a pretty good vocabulary. Learn something new every day. See my reply post #20.
Deport the families (if they are illegals, which is likely). When these youths get out of prison, deport them too.
Didn’t you read the story?
A “fireplug lighthouse” that’s livable. I could live there if I didn’t already have a place I love.
The “year zero” mindset is something the left and Islam have in common.
Throw their azzes in prison and put them on a chain gang to work it off. 20 years should do the trick.
“It’s disappointing, and it’s heartbreaking to see this kind of damage that was just completely unnecessary,” Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said in News 12 footage earlier this week.

So the liberals in Westchester County are “disappointed” because the vandalism was “unnecessary”?
Boy, there’s a strong response.
I know. But this of the architecture and fountains ⛲️
Fire is a weapon of leftists and lunatics, and it’s being used quite a bit these days. Here in Butte County, CA, the Bidwell Mansion, the heart of Bidwell State Park (right in the middle of downtown Chico), was completely destroyed by a self-hating arsonist who wanted to show everyone how truly selfless and wonderful he was by destroying what he had been programmed to view as a symbol of ‘White Supremacy’. Its remains stand there as a charred, burned out hulk, with some in the community wanting it to be replaced with some kind of monument of apology to oppressed peoples. Similarly, deranged vagrants and fringe characters are starting wildfires all over the place while the media tell us it’s all ‘climate change’ related.
Yep - they look like they originated south of the border - and what makes me more positive is that the article described them as “baby-faced”....
Hang’em..🙄
John Bidwell (1819–1900) was a pivotal California pioneer and the founder of Chico, California. Born in New York, he led the Bartleson-Bidwell Party in 1841, one of the first American emigrant groups to cross the Sierra Nevada via the California Trail. Settling in Alta California (then part of Mexico), he became a Mexican citizen, worked for John Sutter, and acquired large land grants, including Rancho Arroyo Chico, where he established his ranch and later laid out the town of Chico in 1860.What a loss.Bidwell struck gold on the Feather River at Bidwell Bar before the 1848 Gold Rush, using his wealth to build an agricultural empire. His Rancho Chico became a model for California farming, introducing crops like almonds, raisins, olives, and casaba melons. He also built a flour mill, general store, hotel, and post office, fostering Chico’s growth.
A key figure in California’s early history, Bidwell served in the Mexican-American War, attaining the rank of major, and helped draft the Bear Flag Revolt’s constitution. Politically, he was a California state senator (1849–50), a U.S. congressman (1865–67), and ran unsuccessfully for governor three times and for U.S. president in 1892 as the Prohibition Party candidate. He supported women’s suffrage, temperance, and opposed monopolies.
In 1868, Bidwell married Annie Ellicott Kennedy, and their 26-room Bidwell Mansion, completed that year, became a social hub, hosting figures like President Rutherford B. Hayes and Susan B. Anthony. Bidwell donated land for what became California State University, Chico, and Annie later gifted 2,240 acres for Bidwell Park. He died in 1900, leaving a lasting legacy in Chico and California.
The County Sheriff and the local Police nabbed him. Some very, very impressive work on their part.
The arsonist is serving time in state prison, up in Susanville. The latest word is that his sentence will likely be reduced, because he seems to be behaving himself there.
Could be that one of the four men is from a ‘good family’ and exempt from prosecution.
I wonder if they live in apts put up at taxpayer expense along the rail line by the saw mill road
Bring back the Whipping Post and 39 lashes.
Why make them a continuing liability for decent people? These little animals are a burden to society and will never be anything else. They need to be disposed for ever.
