3 teens arrested for trashing, burning historic Sleepy Hollow lighthouse in ‘heartbreaking’ fire

Three teens have been arrested for trashing and setting fire to the beloved historic Sleepy Hollow lighthouse in a “heartbreaking” attack just a year after its multimillion-dollar renovation, according to officials.

Baby-faced firebugs Elvin Ayavaca, 18, of White Plains and Richard Barrero, 19, of Harrison, along with an unidentified 17-year-old, caused at least $100,000 in damage to the charming 142-year-old landmark, the Westchester County Police said in a press release Friday.

The trio was charged with arson, burglary and criminal mischief after getting caught on camera strolling over a bridge leading to the lighthouse Saturday, according to police. A fourth suspect is still at large.

The young suspects are accused of hopping a locked fence at the “cherished” lighthouse at around 3:30 a.m., then smashing a window and climbing into the towering red-and-white structure.

Once inside, they allegedly lit parts of the bottom floor, which is set up as a museum, and damaged antique furniture and at least 35 precious books.

The vandalism came a year after the county unveiled a $3.4 million renovation of the lighthouse’s interior, including a restoration of its historic spotlight. The destruction sparked local outrage and plenty of police tips, Westchester County Police Public Information Officer Kieran O’Leary told The Post on Wednesday.

The teens were arraigned in Sleepy Hollow Village Court on the felony charges, according to police, who said they aren’t naming the 17-year-old because he’s a juvenile.

I see four "teens," but maybe one of them split before the vandalism / arson began.

I’m not sure but the last names sound Hispanic to me. Illegal? Either way, they probably don’t have the money to pay for damages, so some sort of punishment. Maybe prison time with badass gangbangers for a couple years, then garnish whatever pay they get after that until the debt is paid.

I’m a person who respects history and historical sites.

Teens come and go but their damage is irreparable in many cases.

The trouble with Muslims who take air hammers and chisels and destroy carvings on rock which don’t go along with their “religion”, and teens who destroy and vandalize things, is they will someday be dead and gone but the historic artifacts are gone forever.

They abducted an elderly scholar and tortured him for a month to force him to reveal the secret locations of some priceless artifacts. He held out.

“Syrian archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad was the director of antiquities and museum in Palmyra, Syria. In 2015, he was held captive, tortured for a month, and then beheaded by ISIS militants who sought to uncover the location of valuable hidden artifacts from the ancient city of Palmyra.
Despite the torture, al-Asaad refused to betray his deep commitment to preserving the historical treasures of Palmyra. He is considered a hero by cultural historians.”

Two examples:
ISIS: The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is known for its systematic destruction of ancient sites and artifacts in areas under its control, particularly in Iraq and Syria. ISIS militants used sledgehammers and other tools to demolish ancient artifacts in the Mosul Museum, including cherished pre-Islamic antiquities, and also used them in their attack on Nimrud, the ancient Assyrian city, where they pulverized carvings, statues, and walls. They have also used bulldozers and explosives to destroy sites like Nimrud and Hatra.
Taliban: In 2001, the Taliban destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas, giant statues carved into a cliff in Afghanistan. They initially used anti-aircraft guns and artillery, but ultimately employed explosives placed in holes drilled into the statues to complete the destruction.

I’m not sure but the last names sound Hispanic to me.

The surname Ayavaca is most commonly associated with Ecuador and the Quechua-speaking Andean region.

The surname Barrero is a Spanish surname meaning "clay loam". It is a topographic name, meaning it originated from a place where clay loam was found.

Is that enough certainty for you, newbie?

The sooner these four future convicts are fitted for prison jumpsuits the better.

Wait until Moslims get a chance to destroy the art of Europe. Bot just the vandalism they do ow..own... but rubble it.

It’s coming.

And music?

Gone.

We should probably help send it to China if they want it they will protect it.

We won’t.

Do you get a tingle up your leg when you drive people from the forum by calling them newbie? Stuff like that poisons the forum.

It’s too bad we don’t have carnal punishment for criminal demons like these kids. In countries that have whippings, they would have had their asses blistered.

I’m not a newbie. I was a “freeper” with a different id back in the 1990’s and early 2000, and I’m older than dirt. But Thanks for the info, I thought they were Latinos and I was right. I really don’t have any ill feelings towards them, except for the ones that are here illegally.
