Georgia mayor, 2 others jailed on felony charges for trying to halt local election

The mayor of a small city in Georgia and two former election officials have been jailed on felony charges stemming from efforts last November to halt a local election after one of the mayor’s allies was disqualified from a city council race.

Camilla Mayor Kelvin Owens was being held at the Mitchell County jail Friday, two days after a grand jury indicted him on a felony charge of election interference and a misdemeanor count of conspiring to commit election fraud.

Also jailed were the city’s former elections superintendent, Rhunette Williford; and her former deputy superintendent, Cheryl Ford, who is currently Camilla’s city clerk.

They were charged with the same crimes as the mayor, plus misdemeanor counts of failing to perform their duties as public officers.

Chaos roiled special elections for a pair of city council seats in Camilla last November amid a long-running legal battle over local politics in the town, a farming community of about 5,000 people in rural southwest Georgia.

The case revolved around Venterra Pollard, a city council member removed from office last summer after a judge ruled he wasn’t a Camilla resident.

Pollard ran to regain the position in the fall special election.

Another judge ordered Pollard disqualified and ruled that votes for him should be discarded. In addition, the city was ordered to post signs saying votes for Pollard wouldn’t be counted.

On Nov. 4, the day before Election Day, both Williford and Ford quit as the city’s two top elections officials.

Election fraud is rare and never enough to affect the outcome of an election.

Well, it’s the AP and there’s no mention of party affiliation, so we know what that means.

Place names can be tricky.
And sometimes, one hears of deep political corruption and one might assume it takes place in a Third World backwater, perhaps out in the Caucasus or in Africa.

But, no, it’s disgusting political corruption in the good ol’ USA. With the usual suspects. To be expected under the circumstances.

According to Ballotpedia, Kevin Owens ran as a Republican candidate for District 35 of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2012.

However, the context does not provide information about Mayor Kelvin Owens's political party affiliation in his current role as the Mayor of Camilla, Georgia.

He is also a retired United States Marine with nearly 22 years of active duty service.

He served as a Department of Defense Contractor in Afghanistan and has experience in the security and investigations sector. Owens is also a veteran of the Iraq War.

And party affiliation of implicated parties is......

Not likely Republican or that would have been bolded in the headline.

Not one I would expect to be a democrat, but I guess neither would it surprise me that democrats would go after him when they do the same thing.

Only the right is held to the law.

It’s interesting though that I can find no information as to which political party he ran for Mayor as. Perhaps he went non-party affiliation for that race.

No longer.
Yes, used to be, one could “assume” that a veteran or long-term military would be a patriotic, loyal American. No longer.
The democrat began actively recruiting racists and fellow-travelers before the 2004 election, then ramped it up tremendously after the 2010 elections when Obama lost House and Senate and local races to conservatives.

Yet another corrupt African American Democrat mayor.
Lets not forget mayor “Kobe” (also in Georgia) who actually broke into someone’s house to commit a burglary, only to be arrested by the police.

Camilla, GA is 73.6% Black, with minority races being 13.7% White, 6.9% Hispanic, and the rest being mixed race or other.

I haven't dug into this one, but frequently municipal elections are technially non-partisan

The DA for the circuit appears to be a Republican, which surprises me. Area used to be solidly democrat.

Well, I certainly agree that what you say is possible, for we have seen that to be a reality, but do you have any evidence that what you say is accurate & correct?

Because it could also be lawfare that is made up to remove someone who is just the opposite of what you describe. We have certainly seen examples where those who stray too from the expected norm are targeted.

I think we may have seen an example of that with regards to Mark Robinson. I certainly believe what we saw presented was a complete fabrication of the claim leveled against him to take him down. It has become far too easy to make these fabrications, and politics have become so divided, it is not hard to find people who will lie in support of the fabrication because many people no longer possess a moral compass. Thua, they couldn't care less what happens to them, for they are traitors in their eyes who deserve what will come to them.

What else do we know about the DA? While being a Republican used to carry a lot of weight with me, it doesn’t carry as much as it used to, because so many Republicans are RINOs.
