Why American celebrities ‘escaping’ Trump by fleeing to Britain may be in for a big surprise
NY Post ^ | 5/31/25 | Zoe Strimpel

Since Trump began his second term, Britain has become a political escape hatch for American celebrities and wealthy Democrats.

It’s so popular that last week, the British Home Office released data showing that in the 12 months leading up to March, almost 7,000 US citizens applied to become British subjects or live here indefinitely — the highest number since such records began in 2004.

A third of those applications have been received since Trump took office at the start of 2025.

**SNIP**

But the glitzy progressives falling for Britain may find they are in for a shock: This is not the liberal paradise they imagined, despite our Labour prime minister. In fact, Britain’s next leader could be a lot like Donald Trump.

The populist Reform party is surging in the polls, threatening to explode Britain’s political landscape. It is built around Brexit architect Nigel Farage, an anti-immigration figure with similar cult-like status to Trump and the president’s erstwhile close friend.

Reform is no fringe party: 40% of Brits think Farage will be the next Prime Minister.

“lovely dinner of roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding ( it’s like a giant popover, that you get a slice of ) “

This is exactly what they serve at Roast, the Yorkshire pudding is made under the roast with real beef drippings it’s heavenly. Look up thread I linked their address. St. John’s and Roast are my two go too meat temples in London. The bone marrow at St.John’s is a life altering experience.

LOL...oh my, what an interesting OLD commercial!

I know that Brits used to and may still call cigarettes "faggots" or "fags", but that meat dish is a new one on me.I'm going to have to do a search and find out what that is.

Simpson's in the Strand is a very old and VERY famous restaurant, which I have dined in, many times over, with great delight.

There once were many great restaurants in London; however, sadly many fine ones are gone now.

The IVY is till there though.

Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy is epic win. The hotel is five star too. The whole Strand area is cool so is Soho. I always end up at Twinnings being a tea over coffee guy. Unless I am in Italy specify Rome then coffee over tea.

"But when they discover how far short of a liberal paradise Britain is becoming, their stays on this sceptred isle might be shorter than anticipated."

You should be so lucky Zoe. Oh by the way, there is nothing "racist" about saying a Paki in the UK might be more concerned with his own country than with yours.

I ADORE the Savoy and have stayed there many times.

It's filled with history, their afternoon HIGH CREAM TEA is superb, the famous bar, in the front, is also quite nice, as are they're several different dining rooms.

The Tate ( the original Museum, not the new one ) has an out of this world restaurant for lunch. And Harrod's many different dining areas and restaurant are also VERY good.

“Indian food” really wanst ever authentic, it was some immigrants from over in the far eastern area with Bangladeshi cuisine that used those spices to invent something the English would eat. Nobody got around to telling the people over in places like Dehli that this is supposed to be what they ate until English tourists told them so.

Its kind of like “Chinese” is or “Japanese” is becoming in the US. Very few if any foreign grandmas involved, mostly just some American guy with a lot of imagination.

That depends on where you're talking about!

In Chicago and a large swath of CT. chines restaurants, except for a few hole in the walls that are garbage, Chinese restaurants are....GONE!

Our Japanese restaurant is owned by a Japanese man and the chef IS Japanese.

The language is spelled Welsh. The Welsh name for the language is Cymraeg. The phonetics are simple. No complex rules. The vowels are aeiouwy. There are some unique "letters" in the alphabet: ch, dd, ff, ll, ng, ph, th. Welsh lacks the letters k, q, v, x and z. The letter j was recently added to support foreign words like garej, jiraff and ffrij.

The classic long word in Welsh (for tourists) is: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The longest legal place name in Wales is where my ancestors lived: Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn.
