Greek authorities in Thessaloniki located and seized 1.6 mln euros worth of cocaine hidden inside a container of bananas from Ecuador.
Greek authorities in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki located and seized a significant quantity of cocaine hidden inside a container of bananas from Ecuador, reports MEGA TV. During targeted inspections in the early morning hours of Tuesday at the container terminal (SEMBO), fifty plastic packages containing a total of 57.919 kilograms of the narcotic substance were discovered. The packages were carefully concealed within the container’s refrigeration units.
Oddly enough, this is not the first time that a shipment of “cocaine bananas” has been discovered at one of Greece’s port’s. Another shipment was detected by authorities in November of 2024 in a container in Piraeus. At that time the haul was estimated at 4.1 million euros, and the ship originated from Panama.
The more recent operation was conducted by the regional narcotics team of the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki, with the assistance of the mobile X-ray scanning system of Thessaloniki’s customs office, as part of intensified checks to combat drug trafficking through maritime routes.
In addition to the narcotics, authorities also confiscated the container used to conceal and transport the drugs, as well as a portable GPS tracking device found alongside the substances, possibly intended for monitoring the cargo’s route.
The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki, while the estimated value of the seized quantity is approximately €1,600,000.
IIRC, years ago they tried smuggling the coke is plaster-of-Paris models of some Greek statues......didn’t work.............
For truth in lableing, smugglers could smuggle coke in coke bottles.
They’d better put a tail on at least one of them.
They would have to put one on all of them if they were from Zamboanga...
They probably developed cracks...

(Bananas, Greek Greengrocers, Musical History)

The story goes that one day in 1922, songwriting duo Frank Silver and Irving Cohn were on their way to work in New York City when they stopped for a snack. At a greengrocer’s, the Greek immigrant owner told the tunesmiths in his broken English, “Yes! We have no bananas today.” The reason the grocer had no bananas? A blight in Central America had caused a shortage. The songwriters made the phrase into the title of their next song. In a Broadway revue called Make It Snappy, the tune was introduced by star Eddie Cantor, and it zoomed to number one on the Hit Parade for five straight weeks. “Yes! We Have No Bananas”
Maybe they spiked the bananas with cocaine to get some traction? (Slide over!)
Someone’s gonna swing for this...
As soon as they learned that their ruse was detected, they probably split.
Would anyone be surprised if USAID was involved?
The whole world is one big Democrat Plantaintion!
Thessaloniki (or Sal-on-NEE-kee as I recall the locals pronouncing it). Lived there in a hotel for 6 weeks to oversee some fabrications that a local steel plant was doing.
It was my daily routine to walk along the waterfront for several miles past the White Tower and the statue of Alexander the Great on his horse.... memorable times for sure.
Banana plants are a form of grass...
