MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — According to multiple reports, legendary gymnast Mary Lou Retton has been arrested. Retton, 57, was arrested for driving under the influence in Marion County earlier this month.
According to a report from WDTV, Retton “was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or drugs on Saturday, May 17th, according to magistrate court records. A judge gave Retton a $1,500 personal recognizance bond, court records state.”
Retton was also recently in the news after suffering from a very rare form of pneumonia and was “fighting for her life” in 2023. She was not able to breathe on her own at the time and was in the ICU for over a week.
In 2023, Retton’s daughter, McKenna Kelley, posted the following message on Instagram: “My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not discolose all details. However, I will disclose that she is not insured. We ask that if could help in any way, that you 1.) PRAY! and 2.) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill. ANTYHING, absolutely ANYTHING, would be so helpful for my family and my mom. Thank y’all so very much!”
Retton did not have insurance at the time and the crowdfunding page raised over $200,000 per day to pay for her medical expenses.

I can remember back in the 80’s some Philly cop arrested former heavy weight champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier for suspicion of DUI because he was slurring his words when he was stopped. Of course, that was because he was punch drunk, and he beat the rap. Hopefully, sweet Mary Lou can do the same. I’ve been stopped a few times for suspicion of DUI when I was stone cold sober just because I was driving late at night at the end of the month. At the end of the month, cops are trying to make their monthly quotas.
Leave her alone. Good grief. I mean, let the law do its thing, but good heavens, do I want to read about YOUR indiscretions as if they need headlines?

I dont know her situation but i think she should be treated with blind justice and no special treatment because she was a gymnast and celebrity. Treat her fairly according to the law.
With her stature, it wouldn’t take more than a tablespoon to put her over the legal limit.

Yeop. Got stopped when I jerked the wheel while reaching for a french fry at 130am after working a ten hour night shift at my aerospace mfg job. Just minutes earlier I purposely held my place at a stop light so the blinding headlights of the cop behind me would go tf around me. He didn’t. When the cop finally pulled me over I was good and pissed off. He said he pulled me over for one of my license plate lights being out. Fine. Ok. Whatever. “Just do what you got to do and get me out of here”, I said. The very last thing he said after running my ID was “have you had anything to drink tonight, sir?” To which I said through a mouth full of fries: “HELL NO!”. Took my ID from him and off I went. Got just a warning. Dude was just doing his job...but he got my hangry tude. Screw it.
