Hill (as cited in Hill & Simons, 1989) described specialization as athletes limiting participation to a single sport, which they train for and compete in on a year-round basis.

That was my plan until I tested positive for steroids and was drummed out of the Professional Cornhole League.

My coach wanted me to do some resistance training, so I refused to go to the gym. He also wanted me to burn 2000 calories every day, I said no problem so I left the brownies in the oven too long.I was asked why I was so fat and told them it runs in the family but I was corrected and was told NOBODY runs in my family. I’ve added squats to my daily routine by moving my beer to the lowest shelf in the refrigerator.

in order to make money all sports are turned into year round enterprises…and I think it is great…

early specialization can easily be avoided by doing two sports year round and alternate practices…each team might complain about this lack of commitment but it’s not hated to overcome that by ignoring what they say

I took my 10 yr old to a baseball skills camp in Florida. The coach was a crotchety old coot. This was when Michael Jordan was trying a baseball career. He opened with this speech:

Michael Jordan is the best basketball player that ever lived, heck, he may be the greatest athlete of all time. But he will NEVER make it in baseball. Because, when he was your age, he was shooting baskets and not hitting balls. He will never learn to hit a fastball, and he will fail.

He was right.
