Earliest Humans Arrived in Sicily 16,500 Years Ago
Archaeology Magazine ^ | May 12, 2025 | editors / unattributed

According to the Greek Reporter, archaeologists have discovered the earliest known evidence of human occupation on the island of Sicily in San Teodoro cave near the town of Acquedolci -- finally proving a theory that was first posited over 75 years ago but unable to be confirmed then. Modern dating methods of sediment layers where stone tools, animal bones, and charred wood were found estimated that they were 16,500 years old, revealing that humans inhabited Sicily much earlier than previously thought. Groups of hunter-gatherers likely crossed the sea in small boats from mainland Europe as the last Ice Age was coming to an end. At the time, Sicily would have been a glacial refuge where these groups would have hunted large animals, especially deer that supplied them with meat, hides, and bone to make tools. Stone tools such as scrapers and points, which were made from local flint and quartzite, were also found within the cave. The new study also surprisingly indicated that the island was covered with maple, oak, and beech trees at a time when much of Europe was still buried in ice. ‘Monty’s to get the Vizzini-Caltagirone road in his drive to flank Catania and Mount Etna by going up through Enna. This means you’ll have to side-slip to the west with your 45th Division.’

” And they brought the thick pizza with them.”

I was thinking about wine, a nice Chianti to go with the pizza.

He’s got his hand over exactly where I live. That’s because he knew years ago that that’s where I keep a nice stash of hot Sicilian babes and nice vino locale.

Re: "16,500 years ago..."

That means Asians reached Alaska and North America 5,000 years before Europeans and North Africans figured out how to get to Sicily!

I would have guessed that Humans arrived in Sicily 35,000-40,000 years ago.

Is there any evidence that Neanderthals or other pre-Humans found their way to Sicily, or to other Mediterranean islands like Crete, or Cyprus, or Corsica, before 16,500 years ago?

Why did ice age end? It was global warming caused by million times bigger than earth, the Sun. Global cooling and global warming has been going on for billions of years before humans learned to start a fire using Flintstones. Humans are puny creatures. They are incapable of causing climate change. Astronauts in orbit can’t see any human structures. And earth itself is so puny compared to the Sun, a million Earth’s will fit inside Sun’s volume. Simple physics.

A is for pappardelle and B is for tagliatelle.

Obviously.

Seems to me there would have been a land bridge back then.

The separation is barely a mile at the closest point. They could swim over and back easily in a day.

Pizza delivery hadn’t been invented yet so they had to “migrate” to where the pizza was.

its not surprising given how close Sicily is to mainland Italy. The straits of Messina are not quite 2 miles wide. The river in my hometown is wider in places.

Abydos to Sestos is easy. Though not impossible, a 2-mile swim in the sea between Sicily and the mainland is not easy. Or so said my great-grandpa Rocco who hailed from Messina.

“Astronauts in orbit can’t see any human structures. “

False, with the naked eye the average human from the ISS or formerly the shuttle can see the Great Wall of China. Three Gorges Dam is also visible. The multiple man-made Palm Islands in the Persian Gulf as well. With simple binoculars you can see the Pyramids, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover dam. The Florida key’s causeway is also visible with naked eyes better with binoculars.

Easier if you use a couple of logs for a raft, or a canoe.
