Britain's Largest Iron Age Gold Coin Hoard Revealed

British authorities recently revealed a one-of-a-kind Iron Age coin hoard, according to a statement released by Chelmsford City Life. Known as the Great Baddow Hoard, it was discovered by metal detectorists in Great Baddow, Essex, in 2020, and is soon set to go on display for the first time at the Museum of Chelmsford. The treasure contains 933 gold coins dating to between 60 and 20 b.c., making it the largest Iron Age gold coin hoard ever found in Britain. The coins date to a time when British tribes were striking their own currency using regional dies instead of importing Celtic coins. It was also a time of upheaval on the island due to Julius Caesar's second invasion of Britain in 54 b.c. The cache of coins suggests there was an ongoing conflict between the neighboring Trinovantes and Catuvellauni tribes. Archaeologists believe that the collection of coins may have actually been intended as a tribute payment to Caesar. "Not a lot is known about Chelmsford's Iron Age history and the Great Baddow Hoard helps us fill some of the gaps in the archaeological record of this period," said Chelmsford City councillor Jennie Lardge.

I think it’s hobbyists with metal detectors and they are required by law to report what they find. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

Cool to see, however.

Does it seem to you that people find more gold/silver/bronze coins in England than anywhere else in Europe or even the world.

There’s hardly a year that goes by when there isn’t some news of a vast new hoard of coins being found somewhere in England—but not so much ireland or scotland or even wales

The Roman Empire was prosperous for much of its history, for one thing. R. McLaughlin cites information about how most of the tax revenue supporting state activities came from a relatively few provinces, and how some (particularly border spots) were net drains on resources. Those areas had to be held presumably because of the neg conseq if they weren’t.

Britain seems to have been the preferred retirement destination for military personnel who took their land grants.

That sounds awfully judgmental about sociopaths. You may have sociopathphobia. You might want to look into that.

“Who finds this stuff and then reports it??”

There was a short lived TV series called ‘The Detectorists’, I think on Netflix. It’s a comedy set in GB. These guys are supreme nerds.

When something is found, it must be reported. After it is declared treasure, a committee of experts on treasure decides the value. When a museum, usually the local, buys it, the money goes to whoever finds it. Minus income tax, of course. If found by detectorists, they have to split it 50-50 with the land owner.

Wow! Both this post and the post before it both mention Chelmsford!

One in the UK and one in Massachusetts!

Great coincidence!

The coins look like someone cut out slices for themselves.
BTW this is the reason many coins today have ridges on the edge so you can tell if someone is trying to cheat you.
