Trump aims to rename Veterans Day ‘Victory Day for World War I’

President Trump said he wants to rename the federal holiday Veterans Day “Victory Day for World War I Day” and add another holiday to commemorate World War II, declaring the United States should “start celebrating our victories again!”

“Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II. I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I,” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Thursday.

He added, “We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!”

Veterans Day, the federal holiday observed Nov. 11, originated as a way to celebrate the end of the World War I, but the day honors all military veterans.

The president did not say if he would want to make May 8 an official federal holiday. He called on renaming it as a day to celebrate the victory of World War II.

Federal holidays are created through acts of Congress. In 2021, Congress voted to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday, and former President Biden signed the bill into law.

I thought Veterans’ Day was to celebrate our Veterans, Independence Day for our independence and victories in war, and Memorial Day to mourn those who died for our country and lost loved ones.

I think we have enough holidays. Some of the secular ones should pull double duty!

At least all the living WWI vets will feel honored and ... oh wait. Well, that’s awkward. Yeah, let’s keep this for all vets.

I don’t agree with changing it. It’s a day to pay tribute to all who have served our country. Add another holiday for WW I victory if you want.

We’ll have to commemorate the end of the current war and the obliteration of the Deep State and draining of the Swamp some day.

Not sure President Trump has a day in mind of celebrating that.
Maybe some date affiliated with the Revolutionary War.

This maybe a nothing burger. Congress is in charge of passing legislation for federal holidays and the president would have to sign it. Even if congress changed the makeup of Veterans Day, college campuses will ignore it like they presently do for Veterans Day..

As a Iraq veteran can’t say I’m excited about this.

><

As a Vietnam combat vet, I’m not excited about it, either.

Because to honor veterans who fought in WW 1, It's called Veteran's Day for a reason. Just like Memorial Day was for Civil War veterans not for sales and picnics. There's also VJ day for the end of WW2 and in August for Victory over Japan.

We have all sorts of days and months for left wing ideologies like LGBT and Trans but we only recognize one day here and there for our veterans.

I don’t know why he thinks this is a good idea. Veterans are among his most loyal supporters.

It would be interesting if an entire month was dedicated to veterans by President Trump..

That would explode heads..

This seems like just changing it to say you changed it. I’d support a law saying no more fed holidays until you get rid of one. Or maybe two. Juneteenth or whatever it’s called for sure.

No. All our veterans and those who gave their lives for our country deserve to be honored and remembered. WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and so on.

This might just be Trump’s way of trolling Putin ahead of their big Victory Day and he doesn’t really mean it. I hope he doesn’t mean it.

It’s a bad idea, but look, he’s always free to issue an additional proclamation about Victory in WWI Day along with the usual Veterans’ Day proclamation.

We should really have another holiday and dedicate it to veterans.

The United States has far fewer holidays than most other countries.
