A recent flight to Italy was disrupted by a passenger who was upset about getting the wrong onboard meal. Before the plane turned back to the U.S., the man tried to charge into the cockpit. Passengers were stranded at their original airport for eight hours until their flight could take off again the next morning. Passengers on board a transatlantic American Airlines flight from New York City to Milan earlier this month were nearly at the the halfway mark of their eight-hour journey when they learned their plane was making a U-turn back to the U.S.
The reason: one disruptive passenger, whose tantrum was reportedly sparked over an in-flight meal order gone wrong, according to a CBS News report.
The flight departed on April 7 from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 7:07 p.m. local time, landing back at the same airport at 3:02 a.m., FlightAware data showed. Eventually the same flight number took off again on April 8 at 11:22 a.m., with the passengers arriving at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) at 12:12 a.m. local time.
A passenger told the network the debacle started because the unruly passenger didn't get their meal of choice, explaining that they requested the meal before the flight. But that wasn’t the only issue. “They also wanted to sit in an exit row,” they added. “They had a baby with them, so they told them they couldn't and apparently those two things are what pushed the person over the edge."

They would undoubtedly have to dump significant fuel before landing.
In addition to all the other documents need to fly, perhaps a mental health certificate should be included.
Couldn’t they have tied him down or given him a shot or something?
Anyone else notice, that the writer of this article went out of his or her way, to avoid any gender pronouns for the individual causing the disturbance?
Hypoglycemic, maybe? I’ve seen that send people off the deep end.
AVIATION PING!......................
“They” had a baby with them, geez if its one of those “they/them” freaks no wonder
More likely a vegan
The person’s name needs to be on a list of those NEVER ALLOWED TO FLY ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD AGAIN.
The cost to the airline and its passengers for this childish behavior is incalculable.
I am sure this behavior is also criminal.
Probably not. " nearly at the the halfway mark". Halfway and back is the same distance as a one way flight that gets there. Of course it appears that they weren't to the half way point yet, but the trip back to New York would have likely been into the prevailing wind, so roughly the same amount of fuel used. Not enough difference to require dumping.
The writer left out a lot of details.....makes you wonder.
Journalists seem to do that more and more lately, almost as if it’s in a manual. However, this was early in the article, “ the man tried to charge into the cockpit.” So at least we know it was a “he”.
I never thought of that. Weight right? or no?...
Dude, you were going to Italy. Just eat the crappy in-flight meal. You can have excellent food in Italy. 😋
Whadda d-bag.
Or maybe the meal wasn’t halal.
They tried to give him the fish.
Y’all know duct tape and a little physical kinetics work wonders.
After 9/11 I’m sure flight attendants will find lots of help.
let the cops sort it out at the landing.

"We appear to have a passenger on board whose infantile and unruly behavior regarding their in-flight meal, and having a baby in an exit row seat, is unacceptable to the point where we will have to turn the plane around and take you all back to NYCity.
"Since this will undoubtedly cause you all immense inconvenience and cost, just because of this individual's tantrum, I hereby invite you all to get out of your seats, form a line, and one by one, do whatever you think is necessary to convince this individual to refrain from further disruption.
"Attendents, please advise me when the individual has been sufficiently calmed. Thank you."
Cue the similar scene from "Airplane"....
