Probably not. " nearly at the the halfway mark". Halfway and back is the same distance as a one way flight that gets there. Of course it appears that they weren't to the half way point yet, but the trip back to New York would have likely been into the prevailing wind, so roughly the same amount of fuel used. Not enough difference to require dumping.

The article says they were almost at the halfway point so that is not necessarily so. Also going back to the USA (west) generally you have headwind instead of tailwind.
Maybe they wanted to go back to US legal jurisdiction to deal with the disruptive passenger, even if near the halfway point.
