Long Island Rep. Laura Gillen is urging the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to hold an emergency hearing on the nationwide “surge” in deadly traffic accidents — after an unsettling investigation revealed that a serious car crash occurs every seven minutes on Long Island.
“The failure to secure our roads has led to thousands of lives being cut short, families being ripped apart, and a terrible void being left in too many communities,” Gillen wrote in her letter compelling the committee to take action.
The Democratic lawmaker’s campaign comes after an investigation by Newsday revealed that Long Island drivers get into a serious accident every seven minutes — killing more than 2,100 people and injuring 16,000 others on the roads between 2014 and 2023.

We need serious “car control” legislation
Import the 3rd world and you get 3rd world style driving.
outlaw cars...
I blame Pete Buttgig.
He was Transportation Secretary after all.
Drunk illegals..................
Yes it’s sad that there are car accidents.
Is this a matter for the federal government to address?
Or to look at another way, what sort of law could be passed that would reduce car accidents? Drunk driving reckless driving etc are already against the law, and those laws are state and local laws not federal laws.
Don’t give illegals NY State driver licenses.
a good start would be to reprogram the 10% of Fed highway funds [paid for with gasoline taxes] that are dedicated to bicycle-only “highways”, which get almost zero use, instead using said monies to improving highways with the most fatal accidents ...
Wearing a mask while driving will end it. (S)
Plus, many times they are just given a license without any driver training.
That’s a lot of accidents.
In what world are car crashes on Long Island a “national crisis?” That sounds very local to me.
Jim Ignatowski comes to mind.
Driver’s Ed, like k-12 education in general has produced students with no knowledge, bad thinkers, bad drivers, bad everything.
There are foreigners who can’t read English driving transport trucks... So when you handout a class 1 drivers license with every green card, you end up with a lot of accidents.
We have a low overpass that gets hit 3 or more times a year despite a GIANT sign and various blinking warning lights saying maximum height 11 1/2 feet. They can't read.
Crappy drivers?
Exactly my reaction. It's a problem. Don't pretend it is national in scope to insist on fixing it with federal money.
moronic illegal alien “drivers”
