PBS NEWSHOUR: New York Times columnist David Brooks and Washington Post associate editor Jonathan Capehart join William Brangham to discuss the week in politics, including President Trump's continued faceoff with the courts, if Republicans will begin pushing back against the president and Harvard rejecting Trump's demands.
David Brooks, New York Times: What’s Happening Is Not Normal. America Needs an Uprising That Is Not Normal.
"The core argument is that Trump is really about amassing power," Brooks said of his column. "And anything that might potentially restrain his power, he will destroy. And that includes the court systems and anything part of that livens humanity."
WILLIAM BRANGHAM, PBS NEWSHOUR: Well, you offered a prescription, David, in your column in The New York Times for this moment that we are in. And you called for a civic uprising.
You said in this column, I want to read a bit of this, saying that the attacks that we have seen on institutions — quote — "are not separate battles. This is a simple effort to undo the parts of the civilizational order that might restrain Trump's acquisition of power."
So how would that civic uprising form?
DAVID BROOKS, NEW YORK TIMES: Yes, the core argument is that Trump is really about amassing power. And anything that might potentially restrain his power, he will destroy.
And that includes the court systems and anything part of that livens humanity. It includes the universities, the scientific community, the truth, the media. And so far, we have responded to all these things, NATO, in separate lanes. We think the Fed is different than NATO, which is different from the universities.
But my point is, this is all one thing. And if institutions and even sectors try to respond to this individually, they're doomed.

This is what happens when they close the insane asylums.
This is the uprising, David.
Nah, we need to stop the rat party once and for all.
Correct.
It’s hard to take either Brooks or Capehart seriously.
I know who they are, and what they are.
I think the rats are quietly hoping to regain the White House, and wield this power for evil.
Brooks is worthless and weak. Once Trump defunds PBS he will disappear.
Brooks wants to make sure on the Satanic, DemonRATS have all the power.
Dear Dave,
Trump is just using his Constitutional Powers.
Much like your best bud BrOncO.
Let’s show up on our creased slacks and ATTACK. 🕺
This...is the correct understanding of what is happening.
BTTT
“Acquisition of Power” ——> “Our Democracy.”
Two nutjobs.
They need to give it a rest.
This ‘GOP’ bunch is kept in line because they need an income stream and the DNC-controlled media sets the rules. That why people like Brooks are the ONLY Republicans given any airtime.
This is so unlike them. They’ve never been interested in power before.
Gutfeld and Co. had a great take on David Brooks last week. A lovely time was had by all.

If judges don’t what to be shaking their fists instead of gavels, they need to behave and know their place.
If judges don’t want to have to wear fools’ caps as Congress may require, they need to behave and know their place.
