The Shot Heard Round The World: The Arms & Events Of April 19, 1775
American Rifleman ^ | 4/18/2025 | Joel Bohy

Many volumes have been published telling of the events leading up to the Revolutionary War, as well as the fighting on the first day, April 19, 1775—some more fictitious than true. However, using primary accounts, extant arms, archaeological finds and by studying the battle damage left behind, today we have a much better understanding of what happened, along with the types of firearms that were being used by the men who fought on that pivotal day.

On the night of April 18, 1775, about 750 British regulars began a march from Boston, Mass., to Concord, a town about 18 miles to the west, to destroy warlike stores being hidden there. They had been purchased by the Massachusetts Provincial Congress’ Committee of Safety and Supplies to form and supply a provincial army once the inevitable war broke out. Colonel James Barrett of Concord oversaw the supplies, and the lists of these stores still survive. From artillery, cannon shot, tents, musket balls, powder, cartridges and provisions to medical kits, wooden bowls, spoons and 15,000 canteens, it is very evident why the British felt they should go to Concord and destroy this materiel.

A big thank you to the folks at Project Appleseed who teach both Revolutionary War history and modern marksmanship.

There should’ve been events planned throughout this year & the next to celebrate our history.

Lesson to be learned:

American patriots, farmers, citizen soldiers, took on the mightiest military force in the world. And whipped ‘em.

Which answers the question, “what can your little gun do against a great military power?”

It can do a lot...

At this time, we need to be learning drones and stockpiling them.

His musket survives, which is built from a variety of parts. It has a bore of .75 caliber, a locally made iron ramrod, some imported or re-used fittings, and it had a lug on the underside of the barrel near the muzzle to attach a bayonet.

Clearly an 80% ghost gun assault weapon.

While it would have been nice to have by today, there's still time in the year for the mint to make a Lexington-Concord half dollar like they did in 1925. Granted, a real silver one today would likely cost $90.

Massachusetts @ 1998.

This Texan is in the state working to establish a new territory for my business.

I get informed that the Monday around April 19 is a state holiday and that many things will be closed.

Me: Why?

*. Patriots Day

Me: But y’all did not make the play-offs.

Some anti gun folks i know have tried the line on me about magazine capacity, then and now. Just know, there were three different firearms manufacturers attempting to sell their wares to the Continental congress. One german man had a six round repeating rifle, two gentlemen from our country, one a six round rifle and one had a nineteen round rifle firing that many rounds in twenty seconds. There was no money.

I noticed way back in 1985 that the news media no longer mentions April 19, 1775 in their news editorials. It is as if they don’t want to mention it was started over forced GUN CONTROL as the news media still loves gun control.
Also, too many bad things have happened around that date since 1985 to mention.

When I lived in Mass.,I metal detected the whole property and found what I thought was a .75 musket ball. I didn’t think that caliber was legit. So, I looked it up.

Sure enough...

That is a lot of lead! You could just throw something that big and it would do some damage.
