464-pound NFL draft prospect Desmond Watson knows he must ‘change my life’ to have chance at football future

At 6-foot-6 and 464 pounds, there’s only one thing standing in the way of Desmond Watson’s NFL dreams.

His weight.

The Florida defensive tackle might become the heaviest player ever selected in next week’s draft, but he’s doing everything in his power to make sure that’s not the case.

“Stopping while driving,” Watson said when asked by Fox Sports about what he’s doing to lose weight. “My biggest thing is keep going, get to where I need to get. There are stores and a lot of temptations. That’s helped me immensely: Don’t go inside the gas station. Pay at the pump. Because inside, it’s snacks and all types of things like that. Don’t pull over. If you’re on the highway, stay on the highway until you get where you’ve got to go.” …

“He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.93 seconds”

And survived!

Big Dez actually has a lot of talent. He was a solid starter for UF despite his size. If he could finally learn to push the fork away and get down to 350, he’d be a holy terror in the NFL. I’m rooting for him. He’s a quality guy.

This guy is one minor injury away from being on the Injured Reserve list, never to return.

Leading to another 100 pound weight gain and death before age 30.

Yes, I thought I’d seen on one of the Gator pages he did well.

I did that 2 years ago at my last job. 1 meal a day (dinner) heavy protein, vegetables no carbs. 2 weeks to get the craving for potatoes, bread, etc to go away. Then it was 10 lbs in 2 months with no other changes. The next 10 lbs took me 18 months. I was working remote from home, so it was easy for me to manage it.

My current job has me back at home (thank the good Lord) and my wife started making lunches for me and feeding my rice (her staple)...I’ve added back the last 10 lbs and getting ready to tell my wife to stop making me lunch...though that’s been nice.

You can stay beefed up for football and transform after.

I would definitely do it if it were me for a pro paycheck.

Pro-bowl tackle Joe Thomas is an example.

Sounds like he’s a complete carb addict. It’s hard to stop any addiction. He needs to eat no-carb for a year or two. Maybe transition to a carnivore diet. My mother lost 100 pounds eating very low carb and kept it off. I started eating low carb 30 years ago, dropped 75 pounds and have kept it off for 30 years. I’m now on carnivore and have abnormal levels of energy and strength for my advanced age. Giving up any addiction has to be cold turkey.

... if he gets his weight under control...

The NFL is littered with players who had weight issues and despite all the vast NFL resources and incentives pushing these guys almost all of them succumbed to the fork.

Witness, Eddie Lacy of the Packers. William "Refrigerator" Perry of the Bears. Jared "Hefty Lefty" Lorenzen of the Giants. And many more.

Florida Basketball once had a player named Dametri Hill, who went by the name “Da Meat Hook”.

They called Sonny Jurgenson “Fat” when he played. He’s still around at 90.

And none of those players lasted very long, if you can get the job done, the NFL will give you a lot of leeway, when the production slows down, the NFL stands for NOT FOR LONG because you will be gone and their contracts are not guaranteed.

I recall Tab Thacker, 1984 NCAA wrestling champ at NCState was around 6’5 447 lbs at his biggest, wanted to play football. They told him to get to 350 and he could try out.

He did go on to have a nice acting career starring in Wildcats with Goldie Hawn and a few of the Police Academy movies.
