Medicinal cannabis linked to long-term benefits in health-related quality of life
Medical Xpress / Public Library of Science / PLOS One ^ | April 2, 2025 | Tait M-A, et al

Patients prescribed medicinal cannabis in maintained improvements in overall health-related quality of life (HRQL), fatigue, and sleep disturbance across a one-year period, according to a study.

Anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain also improved over time for those with corresponding health conditions.

A multicenter prospective study called the QUEST initiative (QUality of life Evaluation STudy) recruited adult patients with any chronic health condition newly prescribed medicinal cannabis oil between November 2020 and December 2021.

Tait and colleagues gathered 12-month follow-up data to determine if previously reported improvements at three months would be maintained long-term. Of 2744 consenting participants who completed baseline assessments, 2353 also completed at least one follow-up questionnaire and were included in analyses, with completion rates declining to 778/2353 (38%) at 12 months.

Participants with clinician-diagnosed conditions completed questionnaires covering condition-specific symptoms, and HRQL, which encompasses physical, emotional, social, and cognitive function, as well as bodily discomfort.

The researchers found that short-term improvements in overall HRQL reported at three months were maintained over a 12-month period in patients prescribed medicinal cannabis in Australia. People with chronic health conditions reported improvements in fatigue, pain, and sleep.

Patients with anxiety, depression, insomnia, or chronic pain diagnoses also showed improvements in condition-specific symptoms over 12 months. Patients treated for generalized anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, and PTSD all showed improvements in HRQL.

Participants with movement disorders had improved HRQL but no significant improvements in upper extremity function scores.

Despite this limitation, the results suggest that prescribing medicinal cannabis to patients with chronic health conditions may improve pain, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and depression and overall HRQL.

The findings also suggest that any improvements would be apparent quickly and maintained long-term.

The authors add, "This is promising news for patients who are not responding to conventional medicines for these conditions."

I’m currently undergoing chemotherapy for AML Sometimes I get little headaches after an infusion. I rub CBD Sports cream on my head which brings relief from the headaches.

I also have some Gummies that have a THC content that I use occasionally at night. They make me a little sleepy.

I’d much rather use cannabis products instead of prescribed medication if it’s possible.

Another study that instead says just smelling terpenes of weed helps with pain:

I ordered some THC gummies for my 86 yr old husband on hospice with multiple medical conditions including Alzheimer’s. I wanted them mainly to help him sleep through the night. I decided to take one first to see what it felt like. Oh my goodness, I don’t think I could have passed a drunk driving test. A very weird, unpleasant feeling. Decided not to give any to my husband.

I suspect that’s going to make FR’s drug warriors very upset. They’re dead set against big pharma, but on the other hand it seems they’d prefer you to be nuked to the gills on prescription meds than start up with all that talk about cannabis.

My daughter has been able to kick alcohol and hard drugs, but cannot kick marijuana. She said, Don’t believe the lies. It is addictive.

When i see an aura forming, I pop a single Tylenol. In ten minutes, it’s gone for days.

Sunglasses have helped reduce auras, and use only single filament light bulbs.

The side effects are a lack of mental clarity, neurosis, premature aging, hair turning white and obesity from a stimulated appetite.

Far be it for me to disparage the undoubtedly unassailable scientific medical opinion of someone who was addicted to both alcohol and hard drugs, but your daughter might be just making excuses for why she refuses to give up that last bad habit.

I don’t see how this could be true after watching the Geezer Boomers doing their “Don’t Touch Me” love fest and line dance for the last week on the boob tube. Those potheads were pretty pissed off. And then they had their Tesla hate fest.

I bet you that 99% of hippies from the 60s and beyond drank alcohol, but for some reason Boomers never cite alcohol as the reason for hippy retardation.

From my personal experience with chronic lower back pain, I found that pot use increased my awareness of the pain instead of reducing it. While pot use may help some people, it most certainly didn’t help me.

Cannabis taken regularly if anything can lead to several side effects, including cognitive impairment, increased anxiety or depression, and potential addiction. Long-term users may also experience memory issues and decreased motivation.

So I’m not buying this report.

It is NOT physically addictive. Psychologically, perhaps, but not physically.

When it's in the house, I use it. When not...don't miss it.

It's been almost a year now and don't even think about it.

Gummies hit much harder. Need very small dose ones, or drops for portion control.

First off, there are three primary ‘strain families’ of cannabis; one is a stimulant, another a depressant, and a third is medicinal CBD. I have no idea what family ‘prescription’ the pharmaceutical THC belongs to. And any story that doesn’t include this info is just plain junk.
