Medicinal cannabis linked to long-term benefits in health-related quality of life
Medical Xpress / Public Library of Science / PLOS One ^ | April 2, 2025 | Tait M-A, et al

Patients prescribed medicinal cannabis in maintained improvements in overall health-related quality of life (HRQL), fatigue, and sleep disturbance across a one-year period, according to a study.

Anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain also improved over time for those with corresponding health conditions.

A multicenter prospective study called the QUEST initiative (QUality of life Evaluation STudy) recruited adult patients with any chronic health condition newly prescribed medicinal cannabis oil between November 2020 and December 2021.

Tait and colleagues gathered 12-month follow-up data to determine if previously reported improvements at three months would be maintained long-term. Of 2744 consenting participants who completed baseline assessments, 2353 also completed at least one follow-up questionnaire and were included in analyses, with completion rates declining to 778/2353 (38%) at 12 months.

Participants with clinician-diagnosed conditions completed questionnaires covering condition-specific symptoms, and HRQL, which encompasses physical, emotional, social, and cognitive function, as well as bodily discomfort.

The researchers found that short-term improvements in overall HRQL reported at three months were maintained over a 12-month period in patients prescribed medicinal cannabis in Australia. People with chronic health conditions reported improvements in fatigue, pain, and sleep.

Patients with anxiety, depression, insomnia, or chronic pain diagnoses also showed improvements in condition-specific symptoms over 12 months. Patients treated for generalized anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, and PTSD all showed improvements in HRQL.

Participants with movement disorders had improved HRQL but no significant improvements in upper extremity function scores.

Despite this limitation, the results suggest that prescribing medicinal cannabis to patients with chronic health conditions may improve pain, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and depression and overall HRQL.

The findings also suggest that any improvements would be apparent quickly and maintained long-term.

The authors add, "This is promising news for patients who are not responding to conventional medicines for these conditions."

“Prescribed medicinal cannabis” appears to be helpful for a variety of issues.

Getting off the stuff 45 years ago was one of the better decisions I have made in my life. My brother will be 73 this year. A half-century of smoking pot. I don’t know how he still functions…..

I don’t see how this could be true after watching the Geezer Boomers doing their “Don’t Touch Me” love fest and line dance for the last week on the boob tube. Those potheads were pretty pissed off. And then they had their Tesla hate fest.

For me...

THC is a Godsend. ..to some of us,....

I suffered debilitating migraines my whole life. A few puffs on a THC vape pen stops them in minutes. When I get ‘auras’. So there is that. And I have personally seen extreme epileptics knock out seizures the same way. (Fair disclosure I use to manufacture extraction equipment)
THC has its legitimate medicinal use. But really. Most people just wanna get high. But my goodness. When you experience the legitimate relief of THC for some serious neurological issues you will be a believer.

Feel free to ask me anything about it.

I don’t use it, but I have heard many with digestive issues or pain due to chronic neuralgic problems, that this helps them to function during the day. I just don’t know, and cannot throw a big, wet blanket over the topic, based only on my speculation. I suspect there is a placebo effect going on for some patients.

If THC works for your conditions, then by all means, you should be able to use the treatment that benefits you. Getting my treatment with the VA means such “medication” is off limits. I am glad it brings relief.

Smoke dope. It’s good for what ails you.

Uh huh.

Federal VA does not allow THC. I get it commercially. Maybe once every 6 moths. It works when it works.

Maybe once every 6 moths.

You meant months. See, your cognitive reasoning is faltering. Soon you'll become disoriented and start drooling from your mouth. And near the end on your death bed you'll whisper the cryptic "Rosebud, rosebud".

While medicinal marijuana / THC can help with some conditions, there’s as much hanky-panky in the “medical marijuana” arena as there is in the “working from home” scheme. Several years ago a licensed dispensary opened up just down the block from me in a leafy residential Chicago neighborhood. On the day of the grand opening the line that formed down the sidewalk was comprised entirely of men between the ages of 25 and 45. While they were a scruffy looking bunch, none of them looked to be disabled or in poor health. They looked instead like typical aging potheads.
