You might not think twice about those ice cube trays sitting in your freezer. I didn’t either until I learned what might be hiding in them. Those standard plastic trays that come with most refrigerators or that you pick up at the dollar store for cheap? They could be adding more than just ice to your drinks. Many older plastic ice cube trays contain chemicals that can seep into your ice and then into whatever you’re drinking. Kind of scary when you think about it, right? Let’s look at which ice cube trays you should avoid and what safer options exist.

Same here. I don't use ice cubes in drinks. I grew up in the 50's and 60's. We had stainless steel or aluminum trays with the separate inserts that had the handle you lifted up to loosen the cubes.

77 here. That’s the kind we had. Before the more modern and spacious fridges with larger freezers came out, we had an old fridge that had a small freezer compartment at the top that held two ice trays and very little else.

$34 bit pricey but I suppose it would last a long time.

Mid-50s here, and that’s the kind we had. Ah, the good ol’ days. Any other kids use those trays to make mini-popsicles with cranberry juice etc and toothpicks as the sticks?

Remember the handle you would pull up to break the ice cubes free from the metal forms? They sorta / kinda worked.

Yes, you can use egg cartons as ice trays. Styrofoam egg cartons are particularly suitable because they are watertight and prevent the water from freezing to the carton.

Bah! I don't believe in modern things like ice trays. I just cup my hand, run some water in it and hold it in the freezer.
If you can't wait a couple of hours for ice in your tea, you don't deserve it.
