Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic has been launched by the company as the latest addition to its lineup of cover materials for smartphones and other mobile devices. According to details shared by the New York-based company, the new Gorilla Glass Ceramic offers better drop performance on rough surfaces than other protective glass materials from competitors. The first smartphone with Gorilla Glass Ceramic protection will arrive in the coming months. Corning already provides Apple with the Ceramic Shield material used to protect iPhone displays from damage.

Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic to Debut on Motorola Device The newly unveiled Gorilla Glass Ceramic is claimed to deliver improved drop performance on rough surfaces, when compared to other aluminosilicate glasses from rivals. Corning states that other glass materials failed on the first drop, in its lab tests, while the Gorilla Glass Ceramic material "survived 10 repeated drops from one meter on surfaces replicating asphalt".

It's worth noting that these tests were performed by the company, and there's no mention of which products were tested alongside the Gorilla Glass Ceramic material. More details could be revealed when it arrives on mobile devices.

Ceramic Glass is very close to being like Transparent Aluminum in my books. It has the hardness of sapphire, which is just below diamond.

Corning also said that they are close to producing diamond glass.

Who knows where Corning is located? CorningWare is now made in France.

Corning made all kinds of stuff over the years, even fiber optic cables. But whether they make their stuff in America is an open question. During the Space Race Corning made all kinds of stuff for the Space Program.

I suspect that they’ll be able to produce diamond glass, but will it be a cost effective product? Worthless if it costs $4000 per phone.

I saw a video taken at a trade show about glass for a cell phone that was suppose to be near impossible to crack. Demo showed it being hit and surviving. Someone took the phone then hit the glass on the corner of the table. Not too hard. It cracked.

Get a cell phone holder that has rubber and not a smooth surface as this will make it harder to drop. Find one with a wrist strap would be best.

transparent aluminum is different.

Hardness and Durability: It is significantly harder than conventional glass, with a rating of around 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, just below diamond. Additionally, it displays excellent scratch resistance and durability.

Do the companies that apply this stuff to their phone actually want unbreakable screens?

I suspect they don’t. I suspect they want a screen that is just good enough to take a little abuse, but shatters a bubble in a puppy’s paws when put to the test.

Companies will just blame you and make you pay for the replacement of any equipment that breaks under your care.
