EV charger malfunction sends Huntington Beach [CA] garage up in flames
KTLA ^ | 03/27/2025 | Tony Kurzweil

There were no reports of injury due to the fire but officials offered the following safety tips for those considering purchasing an electric vehicle:

Before buying an EV, have a qualified electrician install a dedicated circuit for your charger as older home wiring may not be suitable.

When charging your EV follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and consult your dealership if needed.

Use a charging device certified by a nationally recognized testing lab.

Plug Level I chargers directly into an outlet, never use an extension cord or adapter.

Install a residual current device to detect faults and prevent fires.

Keep charging components out of children’s reach when not in use.

...And most importantly, don’t purchase an EV.

Same with Steve Cohen, the congressman. Burned up his car collection, too.

“Before buying an EV, have a qualified electrician install a dedicated circuit for your charger as older home wiring may not be suitable.”

No need to do all of that.

All you need to do is go to your breaker box, pull our two 240 volt breakers and replace the breakers with stacks of copper pennies.

This is a standard common-sense type of list of suggestions but since the actual cause of the fire is not mentioned... it is fairly safe to assume that none of the items on the list had anything to do with this fire.

Are they sure this fire wasn’t some idiot neighbor or their own stupid college kid striking a blow against Tesla?

In today’s world that is all too possible.

Similar to whenever we have a power outage around here.

Some idiot always burns their house down because they wired up a generator without an electrician.
Then some other dumb a$$ wins a Darwin Award because they run their generator in their garage and kill themselves with Carbon Monoxide.

They left off an important charging rule:

—Buy an ICE vehicle.

Funny

IMHO the EV fad/trend is waning.

In the US, things tend to become fads/trends and everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon.

Politicians wanting to grandstand always take action in the face of some threat (even if imagined like climate change). They want to capitalize on these nonsense issues as well.

Things get massively blown out of proportion, example: Covid. Or as with EV’s you get a bunch of emotional feel good arguments on one hand and ignoring of the downsides on the other, pretending as if this is following the science.

The EV (((ONLY))) makes sense if we as a nation greatly switch to nuclear power for electricity production. At that point, because you have no H2SO4, HNO3, soot, CO2 or massive sludge production, little mining and logistics required in the power production, there is no doubt that the EV is cleaner.

(((BUT))) the reality is that the EV today is basically a coal and natural gas powered car.

The pollution, often even greater than with the internal combustion engine in net (especially when considering the battery etc), is simply displaced.

People are stupid, and because they see no exhaust pipe, they come up with idiotic terms like zero emission vehicle.

I pretty much agree with your post. I have nothing against EVs for what they are, and if people want to buy them for whatever reason, I tend to have no problem.

I pinged Freeper Tell It Right to this response as an example-someone who buys an EV, researched it, and is good with the right mix of functionality, utility, etc. to fit their lifestyle that a given EV might deliver...I am good with that. I admire someone who understands what they are getting into.

But there are the people (and we know who they are!) who nearly reflexively jump to the defense of any criticism of EV technology...I cannot stomach that. I have no truck with it.

But what pisses me off most of all, is government mandates, be it Federal or State, that outlaw sales of ICE, all that crap, and give MY tax money as a subsidy to prop up a technology that cannot yet stand on its own-that is what makes me crazy.

It isn’t for me at this time, but hey-it isn’t my money or time.

What if I just run a diesel fired tractor and combine instead?

FReeper Red6's post #13 is good from an EV-is-a-fad standpoint.

There's also the matter of infrastructure. Even if we go nuclear, there's the matter of updating the grid to handle all of the extra charging. Again, even if most charging is done at night in homes, that's still a lot of extra "appliances" added to the grid.

And my problems with nuclear are: 1) Where will we get the uranium? And 2) will the left ban it as soon as they are in power again? They have an on again / off again love affair with nuclear. As soon as we start depending on nuclear more they'll try to ban it just like they're trying to ban natural gas (even though they were pushing natural gas as "clean burning" during the Obama years).

So the long term fix is to not try to go nuclear or go EV just to placate the left that can never be satisfied. The long term fix is to keep them out of power and shun them in front of others so the masses know their warmageddon beliefs are just a cult.

For me personally, I like an EV mainly because I can produce my own power. I want that same concept for the nation: whatever most of us drive ought to be dependent on the kind of energy that our nation can produce without relying on others. So if you can't produce your own power like I can, it's probably best to drive mainly cars that our nation can provide energy for: gas cars. Obviously we can produce our own oil / gasoline as long as the left doesn't interfere.

Can we produce our own power just as well (as a nation)? I don't know. Are we willing to fire back up the old coal mines that the left abandoned? Can we buy back from Russia the uranium that Hillary got grift for? I'm not happy with solar or wind on the grid unless we can casually and efficiently supplement it with dependable power sources like natural gas fueled plants that can be throttled up and down when solar and wind are down. (One FReeper posted from Texas that they do that well in Texas. That's the only source I've heard on that. I've read elsewhere that even natural gas plants can't be efficiently throttled up and down daily, much less coal plants and nuclear plants.)

Only if we can upgrade the grid transmission lines and such, and have more dependable power sources will I be cool with much of the nation going EV (assuming you fit the profile of an EV being right in other areas, like you don't take long trips up north in the cold, or you have a 2nd car as your gas car for when an EV won't do, etc.). Until then, I don't want more than just a few of us FReepers going EV if it means giving us a 2nd option for saving gas without having to be all in on just EV tech or just gas car tech (with its over-regulated oil/gas market when a Dim is in office).

Sadly,

Today government dictates what light bulb you use, how many gallons per flush your toilet uses, what refrigerant your AC uses (they constantly change that so that the manufactures make money), pointless vaccines that are required by children, free school lunches for all, what a health insurance must cover, and and and.

All these government bureaucracies we have make their living, try to justify their existence and budgets by “controlling” your life.

Truth is, there is no logical reason for why you need a prescription for an antibiotic. It's just something that was decided so that certain folks can make billions because they make themselves “gate keepers” of this medicine.

Government has become a monster that sticks their nose into every aspect of our lives, even into our homes, family, churches, etc.

I hope that this chainsaw appraoch by Trump and Musk goes all the way. Much of government simply need to "go away," may it be some idiotic cause from the left or right.
