The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to close dozens of offices across the U.S. this year as part of the advisory Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) efforts to shrink the size of the federal government and cut waste.
The closures, which will span 18 states, have raised concerns over their possible impact on the agency's efficiency and the delivery of benefits that millions of Americans receive every month.
Why It Matters
According to the SSA, more than 72.5 million of Americans receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, including some of the most vulnerable individuals in U.S. society.
The expansion of DOGE's efforts to cut costs in the federal government to the agency handling the Social Security program has sparked fears among experts and beneficiaries that benefits may be delayed this year and recipients may struggle to get a hold of their checks.
What To Know
The SSA, according to its own data, has about 1,200 field offices across the country. On its website, Elon Musk-led DOGE lists 47 SSA offices which are set to be closed across the U.S, many of which are concentrated in the South and the Southeast.
According to what an agency spokesperson told The Associated Press (AP) earlier this month, a majority of these offices which will not have their leases renewed were used for in-person hearings, which are being phased out as the SSA focuses on virtual hearings.

4% of the offices.
They can’t find 4%???????
Mountain out of a molehill
Musk explained that actually no social security offices are being closed. Only some portions of offices that deal with in-person meetings. Most meetings now are held by zoom calls.
But we expect such crap from the leftwing propaganda outlets such as Newsweek.
I had to go to our local office once...I was the only one there...but there were 3 workers.....doing absolutely nothing.
Yes this is how the deep state reacts.
Remember the howls of they are cutting dept X when in reality the dept was getting. 7% increase, just not the projected 10% so naturally that was reported as a 3% cut😎
47 offices out of 1200, my city which is a city of 1 million has 4 offices
LA has 11, gutting I tell ya/s
The nearest SS office to us is a joke, they might as well close it. They simply do not give in person appointments. The doors to the building are locked and windows are covered so you can’t even look in to see what TV shows they are watching or if they are snorting coke or just smoking weed.
To get question answered one must use the phone, be put on hold for an endless amount of time, only to get someone that will schedule a phone appointment at a later date.
I recall the days when a person could just walk into the SS office and talk to a real person.
I remember walking into the SS office in NC about 20 years ago. Oddly, I felt like the only English speaking person there.
For some reason I was directed to a window that appeared to be for English speaking customers. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes.
EC
SSA can let their phones ring without answering them from a central location just as easily as they can from a plethora of local offices ...
“has sparked fears among experts and beneficiaries that benefits may be delayed this year and recipients may struggle to get a hold of their checks.”
remember how the “experts” guaranteed twitter would crash and burn when Elon fired 80% of the useless drones there?
I know a lot of seniors that have no idea how to do a zoom call...my 2 older sisters for example.

I’ve been to a SS office once in my life and it was when I lost my card and need to get a replacement. That was 30 years ago but these days, it probably doesn’t need to be in person. Might not have been necessary back then but I was 19 and did what my dad suggested and my parents went with me to make proof of ID go as easy as possible.
Other than that, Learn to Code.
According to the article, there is concern about the “possible (negative) impact of the closures upon the distribution of benefits to millions of Americans.” You can apply for benefits online without going into a local office. After your benefits begin, you have to provide your bank account number for direct deposit.
That is what has me so puzzled-if no DD account on file then how were those ultra-geezers cashing their checks?
Did I miss something?
Who only has 3 offices for the whole state.
THEY are closing one.
I'm not an expert but I know that in-person hearings are NOT done for issuing regular SSA benefits. They are used to determine supplemental benefits for folks claiming a disability and are usually the last resort after sometimes countless denials via snail mail. Sometimes people go years applying for SSI or SSDI.
In other words for the vast majority of folks in-person hearings are a rarity.
Came here to say something similar. I had to go to get a copy of my card. Made an appointment on line. Went to the office and sat in the waiting area for about five minutes. I was expecting the be there a lot longer. I was out of the building in 15 minutes. It was actually a pleasant experience (as far as those things go.)
I signed up to start receiving my benefits last October. I verified my information on line. Submitted my application on line. I started getting my payments the next month. I never spoke to a human.
I have to believe my experience was about “average.”
“I remember walking into the SS office in NC about 20 years ago. Oddly, I felt like the only English speaking person there.”
Same here in Boulder, Colorado. They had several interpreters on hand to help the poor foreigners sign up.
One office in the entire state of Florida and all this drama over that? Mississippi has the most closures of 3 for the state. Seriously, you’d think they were closing every one in all 50 states.
