BYD Unveils High-Speed EV Charging Platform, Doubling Tesla's Speed; Stock Hits Record High
Yahoo Finance ^ | 03/19/25

Posted on 03/19/2025 6:57:56 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

BYD (BYDDF, Financials) introduced a new electric vehicle platform reportedly capable of reaching charging speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts, twice the capacity of Tesla's (TSLA, Financials) latest 500 kW superchargers. Shares rose as much as 6.0% to a record HK$408.80 ($52.61) early Tuesday before paring gains to 3.2%.

The breakthrough represents a turning point in the EV sector as it lets cars go 400 kilometers (249 miles) after a five-minute charge.

Addressing a major issue among EV buyers, the Chinese automaker's "super e-platform" seeks to lower charging time to levels similar to gasoline filling. Han L sedan and Tang L SUV will be the first to adopt the technology, starting at 270,000 yuan ($37,328.91).

With projections of 56 million sales in 2025 and 4.2 million cars delivered in 2024, BYD intends to introduce 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations all throughout China.

The action coincides with rising Chinese automakers investing in charging infrastructure. Up until recently, BYD owners had depended on outside charging stations run by rivals.Since 2014, Tesla has set up superchargers in China, therefore establishing early presence in the market. High-speed charging networks are becoming more and more important as competition rises in order to hasten EV acceptance.

As has been pointed out in numerous prior threads, the infrastructure required by the physics of this type of massive current transfer is not currently feasible at scale. Additionally, current batteries will suffer immensely in terms of loss of capacity.

You are correct. The electric car is a "nitch market" product. It makes a lot of sense for a daily commute to work and the ability to recharge it using 220 volt house current providing it is economic as compared to internal combustion engines in relationship to total cost per mile over the life of the vehicle.

If you are going long distances you need internal combustion engines.

Yope,
It is not that hard conceptually to build a charger of Gigawatt power which would charge the car in seconds. You just need high voltage and huge wires.
Problems - is it safe? That power will kill (evaporate) one instantly!
Can the battery sustain it?
Can somebody provide that kind of instant power (infrastructure!).
What about the cost of wires? Great target for copper salvaging vandals!

“If you are going long distances you need internal combustion engines.”

Depends on the trip. If it is a vacation trip where you don’t drive 900 miles a day, no big deal.

“Problems - is it safe? That power will kill (evaporate) one instantly!”

We already have 600 kv chargers in place. Nobody has been evaporated.

Excerpted from the National Fire Protection Association's Electric Vehicle Safety FAQ:
The fire safety risk of lithium-ion batteries continues to drive conversations among safety professionals. However, it is difficult to answer definitively whether EVs are more or less dangerous than ICE vehicles. More research is needed to better understand the fire safety risks posed by EVs. Compared to ICE vehicle fires—which on average occur every 2 to 3 minutes in the United States—there are fewer electric vehicle fires. When EV fires do occur, though, they can pose unique challenges....

While NFPA publishes a report on vehicle fires in the U.S., existing data collection systems do not yet adequately measure the frequency of EV fires in the U.S. There is no current evidence to suggest EVs are more likely to be involved in a fire than ICE vehicles.

“People sneer at EVs the same way they used to sneer at hybrids.”

I still sneer at hybrids. Expensive without any payback at all. Massive SuperFund waiting to happen.

NEXT QUESTION:

CAN “THE GRID” HANDLE THIS???

I rented a CRV hybrid for a week.

38 mpg. Only one day on the highway.

Toyota Corolla 1.8L gas engine, I see that MPG everyday.

“Additionally, current batteries will suffer immensely in terms of loss of capacity.”

Seems like that much current into the battery would overheat it.

If the charging efficiency of an EV battery were 99%, meaning 1% of the charging wattage would go to heat, 10 KW would be heating the battery.

Wikipedia says the charging efficiency of a LI battery is 80-90 percent.

But this company must have something that works for some batteries.

“Toyota Corolla 1.8L gas engine, I see that MPG everyday.”

Not with city/highway driving.

Not with four people, four large bags, a cooler and suppies.

The CRV hybrid weighs more and accelerates faster.

The safety and efficacy of this device will be determined once it is in widespread use in multiple settings. Just the same would not recommend charging youe EV in an attached garage while you and your family sleep.

Typical for home 120v systems and includes the losses in the charger.

Tesla Supercharging is greater than 90%.

“That is the way it started out on FR. Just stop subsidies.
However that seemed to slowly morph into hating the whole EV and solar industry.”

Noone likes things shoved down their throats. It’s not just subsidies. It’s the mandates, federal and state, that force adoption of EV’s.

“Is there ANY mention of the DAMAGE done to the battery with this fast charging? The damage is significant.”

But most charging will be done at home overnight. This is so you can charge up on a road trip without needing to stay at the rest stop for hours.

You really shouldn’t charge in your garage. Park it in mine instead. And leave a key in case I need to move it out of the way. ;)

Then fight that and stop posting stupid comments about EVs.

Is that an example of the “expert” opinion you use to formulate your opinions? Over thirty people have died in fires started by charging EVs indoors in NYC. In most cases it was bikes but the principles are the same. Get beyond the niche market for EVs and we’ll know the truth. However doubt Ford ,GM or VW will ever recoup their investments in EVs.

Source, please. The reference I see for 30 deaths is for accidents, not fires.

The principles are not the same. EVs have a higher quality and more sophisticated charging system.

NYC has just recently imposed quality standards on bike retailers to keep the Chinese junk off the streets.
