Dems push to pump brakes on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s ‘nearly impossible’ electric truck rule (only 5.88 years left)
NY Post ^ | 3/09/25 | Carl Campanile

State Democratic lawmakers are trying to pump the brakes on the Hochul administration’s “nearly impossible” green-energy rule requiring more new large trucks to be emissions-free.

The proposal, pushed by state Sen. Jeremy Coney Cooney (D-Rochester) and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Binghamton), would postpone the start of the Democratic governor’s edict until at least Jan. 1, 2027.

Hochul’s recent “Advanced Clean Trucks” rule requires manufacturers of vehicles greater than 8,500 pounds to sell an increasing number of zero-emission vehicles in New York, starting with a 7% zero emissions sales percentage in 2025 and ramping up every model year through 2035, to 40% for tractor sales and up to 75% for other trucks.

The legislators said the green edict promoting electric and even hydrogen-powered trucks is wreaking havoc on an important industry.

“Unfortunately, the ACT regulations are nearly impossible for the trucking industry to comply with because of a lack of truck charging infrastructure, cost factors, and other challenges,” Lupardo said in a memo supporting her bill.

“Battery charging times are also a challenge and will remain so until new technology emerges and is commercialized,” she said.

The legislators noted that an average diesel truck can be refilled in about 10 minutes and can drive for about 2,000 miles.

By comparison, an electric, zero-emission heavy-duty truck takes approximately 10 hours to charge and can run for about 500 miles.

Electrical vehicles are having basic problem.
The ordinary gas pump, during filling, delivers energy equivalent of 4MW!
That’s practically impossible with eclectic power. It is basically an output of small power plant or major solar cell project, if sun is up!
Powers of that order are delivered by high voltage power lines, but that kind of voltage would be very dangerous in casual operations.

The energy content of gasoline is just humongous.

I agree, however, AI will be solving fusion generation shortly. At that point, EV's might have a small chance of being useful.

Hochul is actually not aggressive enough. The cargo capacity of heavy-duty trucks is limited by the “Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck. Limits on tire capacity and road damage and things like that require highway departments to limit the total weight of trucks allowed on the roads. Yet even when empty, trucks weigh tens of thousands of pounds. This severely limits the cargo carrying capacity of the trucks.

Instead of limiting her demands for “”Zero emission” trucks, she should also be demanding “Zero Weight” trucks. This will nearly double the amount of freight they can carry; it will also improve fuel economy, lengthen tire wear, and reduce all emissions. Nothing but good will come from this.

Pull into a truck stop, pump 400 gallons of diesel, and be back on the road in 10 minutes? I don't think so.

Your proposal, while interesting, does not go far enough. Given that cargo has weight, the trucks should have NEGATIVE weight to compensate for the cargo.

Of course, this will require that unloaded trucks be tethered down, lest they fly up into the stratosphere.

Thinking like this is dangerous to the established trucking industry. Everyone will want a zero weight truck! One question, will these levitation trucks fit under overpasses? 🤔

I know you don't want to here it, but for many fleets, the future can and will be Tesla's. They are not only for sale but in daily use

I don't see the need for overpasses once Hochul mandates negative-weight cars. They can simply fly over the gaps in the road.

THINK, man, THINK!

You give me small fusion reactors, and we can talk.

Until then, FRiend, no sale.

What retards these Greenie hack politicians are... They must be getting payoffs one way or another. No one does such stupid sh__ for free. Via NGOs? Same as Elon/DOGE have exposed on the Federal level.

The briber can always deposit Democrat hacks payoffs in a foreign bank that the IRS is never notified about. Law says the IRS must be notified.

If we just mandated that every Public Employee in the STATE exclusively use an EV for all Travel and FORBID Taxpayer Funds from being used for any type of “Fossiol Fuel”. Their goals could be easily acconmplished. SHOW US HOW IT’S DONE, OK?

“Kathy is in a pickle. Drill baby, drill comes with discounts.”

NY State has very large natural gas deposits similar to Pennsylvania. But NY state idiots ban such drilling. I’ll bet NY State gets poorer each year, while Pennsylvania is stable or getting wealthier.

Yes and no, the power generation is one part of the equation.
In near future, we will be laughing on the solar and windmills and working hard to safely getting rid of them!
Nukes can solve our energy demands pretty fast.
Fusion has enormous potential, but they are working on it for 60 years.
I still believe they will solve it some day!

What I see as major problem is the transmission.
Present day grid is absolutely inadequate for that kind of energy, and I do not see any practical ways it can be solved.
Transferring 4MW to a car is HUGE problem.
And I am not sure how much power is delivered to trucks?!
Diesel has even bigger energy content and diesel the flow in truck stops may be even bigger (10MW?, more?)

The world biggest power line is 1.1 MV line in China, transferring up to 12 GW of power.
That’s 50 millions of homes, but only about 1000 Trucks at truck stops!

The latest report is that the plasma that is generated has random spikes/fluctuations over its body, and thus, containment is an issue.... but they have successfully employed AI to predict those spikes and fluctuations.

New York has set itself up for disaster with an unreachable climate action plan. This is just one of the impossible things they are planning on.

Another power transfer example I am familiar with:
Navajo power generating station used to deliver 2.25GW of electric power.
It was fed by 2 trainloads of coal a day.

So one train of coal was equivalent a half a day of 2.25 GW electricity.

2.25 GW X 12 hours is 27 GWh of energy in trainload of coal!
