Make Alberta America

If Donald Trump wants a 51st state to the north, here’s how he can get one.

For weeks, President Donald Trump has said that Canada should be America’s 51st state. He has mocked Canada’s economic dependence on the United States. He has condemned Canadian tariffs and trade restrictions. He has scolded Canada’s free riding on American defense. He has knocked Canada’s porous borders and drug dens. He has accused Canada of colluding with hostile foreign powers and global institutions. He has trolled our prime minister.

It’s delightful. Many Canadians are enjoying the show.

Up here in the cold white north, Trump has set the cat among the pigeons. Canada’s chattering classes are wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth. He has challenged their sense of entitlement. He has exposed their patriotism of convenience and knee-jerk anti-Americanism. He has exposed their haughty righteousness. He has identified rot that Canadian leaders refuse to acknowledge.

Here is some friendly advice for the president. The 51st state will not be Canada. The Canadian political establishment, largely centered in Ontario and Quebec, will fight it tooth and nail. Their vested interests depend upon the existing federal order of things. Big fish in small ponds will steadfastly refuse to abandon the pond. Canada will not join the United States as a single unit.

But the country’s provinces are a different matter. Some parts of Canada might be persuaded, one or two at a time, to come stateside. If there is to be a 51st state from north of the border, the best bet is Alberta. Even better would be to adopt two provinces, Alberta and Newfoundland, to start.

Canada has always been an unlikely country. It looks huge on the map, but most of its people live in a ribbon from east to west

I lived in Alberta and still do business there. For that province, joining the U.S. would be a bad move. Being under the control of an oppressive government in Washington is a million times worse than living under a dopey jackass like Justine Trudeau.

I don’t know about Alberta, but Canada as a whole is extremely far Left. And it has a pretty big population. If Canada becomes a state, they would get 2 Far Left senators and a whole truckload of Far Left congressmen. We would lose Congress forever.

Alberta is just like America North. I worked up there for years and you really couldn’t tell the difference between Alberta’s and Arizonans other than one had better tans.

Alberta probably would secede from Canada and join the US as the 51st state if they had the choice. Firstly as a state, they would keep far more of the wealth their massive oil reserves generate like Alaska, Texas and South Dakota do. As it is almost all of that money is siphoned off to subsidize Ontario and Quebec. Albertans hate that with a passion.

Secondly, Alberta had a great many Americans among its early settlers and they have more of the (Western) American mentality. ie they want smaller government, value personal liberty and want to be left the hell alone. As a state, Alberta would have much more local autonomy. Ontario and Quebec are just the opposite. As the two most populous provinces they can pretty much run roughshod over much of the rest of Canada so they do. They obviously don’t want decentralized power for that reason.

What can be said about Alberta can be said to a lesser extent about Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the non Vancouver part of British Columbia.

Canadians feel free to tell me if I’m wrong about any of this, but these are the impressions I’ve been given by many of the Canadians I’ve known.

I tend to agree with you on that. They are socialists and have been indoctrinated by the leftist media.

We could offset that by making NH, VT, MA, CT, and RI into one state. Ditto MD and DE.

Let’s trade Hawaii for Alberta.

Although Hawaii is more beautiful, what does Hawaii produce? Not much of anything. They've got tourism and the military as their big industries. Most of the money in that state came from elsewhere. Alberta is VASTLY richer in resources given its massive oil reserves. It would be quite a wealthy state if most of the money its oil generates weren't be sucked away every year.

America is just fine the way it is (50 states), and bringing in a bunch of people who really don’t have a clue about what America has been, is, and can be again is not a positive. Observing the calibre of elected officials usually tells you all you need to know about what sort of people elect them, and in Canada’s case they need to stew in their own juices without screwing up what’s happening in America.

Is this true? This is the opposite of what I've heard. As a US state they'd keep more of their oil revenue. They'd gain a right to keep and bear arms and their free speech would be much more protected. Its true they would lose the socialized medicine but that's kind of collapsing in Canada anyway. If they wanted to, I'm sure they could implement some kind of public medicine scheme in their state - especially with all that oil money that would be in their pockets. They might even be able to cut citizens a check every year from their oil revenues like Alaska residents get. Taxes would be lower.

I am all for it. Send a couple of US Marine Divisions in to occupy Ontario and Quebec, and seize every provincial capital.

Cake walk.

Canada is ripe for the picking.

The population hates its government, after Trudeau closed down the populist Freedom Convoy, declared them terrorists, confiscated on line donations in the amount of millions, froze donor bank accounts and illegally used the Emergency War Measures Act, criminally prosecuting the movements leaders for exercising free speach. Canadians are a subjected, conquered people who have been reduced to cowering in fear of their own government. They detest Trudeau. So much that the liberals forced his resignation BUT HE STILL WON”T GO.

Make it a territory like Puerto Rico.

The people of Canada are bleating sheep. Trudeau has taken all of the fight out of them.

The majority of Canadians would welcome being a territory of the United States of America.

Ding! People who say all of Canada is socialist are not looking closely enough. That's like saying all of Illinois is socialist because Chicago is. There's a sizable minority that hates all that crap and would naturally fit in with the red states like a hand in glove. Rather than absorb all of Canada and have to take the socialists of Ontario and Quebec on board - which really would tip the US leftward, I propose instead a trade.

We give them New England. We get everything West of Ontario - minus Vancouver which we'll carve out of British Columbia and give to the state of Washington...after forcing them to let Eastern Washington go to join with Idaho or merge with eastern Oregon to form a new red state. Offloading Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts would be a giant flushing of the toilet. 10 Democrat Senators immediately go bye bye. A whole bunch of electoral votes and US Representatives go with them.

I could easily be persuaded to throw in Hawaii and the coastal strip running from Orange County up through Seattle (but excluding the California coast north of Oakland and southwestern Oregon). Think how much happier everybody on both sides would be. The Leftist Klantifa freaks would get their utopia. Decent people would be rid of them and rid of the threat of Gaia Worshiping, transgender global socialism....and of course we'd have a crap ton of oil and other natural resources which the Gaia Worshipers are against developing anyway.
