Gambling addiction has soared since the legalization of sports betting in most American states, reveals a new study.
Researchers found a “dramatic” increase in sports betting and gambling addiction help-seeking since the landmark Murphy v. NCAA Supreme Court decision in 2018 paved the way for states to legalize gambling on sports.
Since the ruling, researchers from the University of California San Diego Qualcomm Institute and School of Medicine found a “staggering” growth in the sportsbook industry.
The number of states with operational sportsbooks grew from one in 2017 to 38 last year while total sports wagers skyrocketed from US $4.9 billion in 2017 to $121.1 billion in 2023, with 94% of wagers during 2023 placed online.

Shocks the hell out of me.
Gambling is an addiction as strong and dangerous as any drug.
I’m no fan of duh-niro but he said it best at the beginning of the movie Casino......”We are here for one reason.....to take your money”.
It’s an addiction. Dopamine hits, etc. Like p0rn or drugs.
One of my sons has a group of friends about 23-24 years old and all they do is bet on games and other online gambling.
But at least back then in Vegas, you would get a lot of comps, and cheap meals.
Those days are over.
If one could combine the two....hmmm
Oh come on now. I’ll lay you 5.25:1 thats gambling is not as bad as you think.
BIG surprise /s
If one could combine the two....hmmm
It would give new meaning to the term “Money Shot”
I wouldn’t bet on this story being true.
How about those Lakers, ehhh!
Money that could be spent on goods.
AZ went live last year and it was non-stop ads for all the different sportsbooks for probably 6 months. I just noticed they’ve now opened up virtual scratch cards, so it’s going to just keep expanding.
i thing gambling addiction is more deeply ingrained than even heroin addiction ...
the group with the highest suicide rate are those with gambling addiction; they recover and relapse over and over again and eventually gamble everything away, including losing their family and children and eventually kill themselves in utter despair ... that happened to a dear, dear friend of mine ...
When I would go to a casino, I had $20, and I played until either I lost it or came out with $100. Probably over time, I pretty much broke even.
… I was gambling in Havana, I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns, and money
Dad, get me out of this, hiyah!
And these are intelligent people, in fact, it preys on intelligent people, because they think they can figure out the “system”.
I am very libertarian. If people want to spend their money being stupid doing drugs & gambling let them. Having said that here’s where I split with many libertarians. As long as these ‘addicts” & “bleeding hearts” can use the power of the state to reach into my pockets and make me pay for their bad choices I want the power to either ban or highly regulate (make unlawful!) those choices. If I want (I will!) to voluntarily contribute to their treatment then fine. But now NO since they’re holding a gun to my head forcing me too!
touche
They could solve the gambling addiction IF they improved their gambling addiction hotlines by making every 5”th caller or so be a winner.
