WASHINGTON — Americans on food stamps may be banned from using them to buy “sugary drinks” and other junk food, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Friday.
The newly appointed cabinet official said she will work with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — to prioritize food-stamp benefits for healthy food items.
“Will we ever take food out of a hungry child’s mouth? Of course not, this is the United States of America, Rollins told reporters on the White House driveway.
“Truly, this program has grown so large, especially in the last administration. Under Biden, I think [the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] grew almost 30% more than before. We really need to look at where that money is going, what it’s being spent on,” she said.
“I look forward to working with Bobby Kennedy as we figure out, ‘Do we have the healthiest choices?’ So when a taxpayer is putting money into SNAP, are we OK with us using their tax dollars to feed really bad food and sugary drinks to children who perhaps need something more nutritious?”
Rollins and Kennedy were both confirmed by the Senate Thursday and will serve on President Trump’s new 13-member Make America Healthy Again commission.
In fiscal 2023, 42.1 million people received SNAP benefits, according to USDA.
The program’s cost was $112.8 billion annually, with benefits averaging $211.93 per month.
It’s unclear how the plan might work, though the idea already is under consideration in Congress.

Good. That’s the way it’s supposed to work and to encourage the bums to get off the damn food stamps so they can buy things they want with their own money.
AND illegals buy food to sell in their stores and to send back to their country for profit.
SNAP/EBT is causing inflation. Also, immediately eliminate any of this assistance for illegal immigrants.
So, which politician or media personality will declare this idea to be racist?
And which politician or media personality will be the first to call it sexist?
And which politician or media personality will call it “a threat to our Democracy”?

That reminds me of when I busted a crew hording “commodities” back in the day to prepare and sell meals out of their restaurant. Caught on after I realized they had grilled cheese sandwiches and canned pork soups as “specials” too often...
Sad to say it was a rich family member who owned the restaurant. They were in charge of the local rural “Distribution” of commodities and were depriving and hording certain items from the Distribution to do it. “nope, no canned canned pork this month sorry”.
I came to hate that rich part of the Clan before it was over with. Very fine upstanding citizens of the community. No, they were actually crooked thieves and that is how they got rich.
Additionally, Federal Benefits for maximum of 2 years, with verification of community service OR seeking employment, required.
If he can get this through AND demolish the Dept. of Education there will be no doubt in my mind that he’s going to be one of the greatest.
Lots of fraud in food stamps, EBT cards and welfare period. There’s tons of scams.
End welfare and that problem is solved.
Something needs to be done about all these huge, sloppy, messy people.

I saw someone in the checkout line ahead of me the other day using SNAP to pay for about $50 worth of groceries as they were buying two $65 bottles of Tequila for cash. They obviously didn’t really need the SNAP.
I lived in SW DC for a year. It was a socioeconomic mix. Go a few blocks in a certain direction and you were in the hood. There was a Safeway grocery store a few blocks away I shopped at.
More than once, I was at the checkout behind someone who was using an EBT card, then pulling out a wad of cash to pay for beer, sometimes bottles of wine.
It sure doesn’t help them to be using food stamps to PIG OUT on pizza and Mexican food at fast food joints. As Dinesh D’Souza quoted His friend as saying, he loves America because even THE POOR PEOPLE ARE FAT.

As a guy who sold flaming hot Cheetos in the ghetto for years, I say this is an excellent idea! There were no grocery stores in the ghettos I worked in. The only place to buy anything approaching healthy food was at a Family Dollar. My customers shopped the wine/snacks/lottery bodega type operations usually Arab owned and operated.
The junk I sold is a staple in these communities. I’ve seen attempts to introduce fruits and vegetables in one of my old, very busy accounts. That attempt was a total bust. Those customers simply were not interested in a healthy option. If they’re not paying for it, they have no right to complain when only healthy food is eligible.
And yet people are still being denied services for not having the jab.
Waiting patiently...and angrily.
My sister’s friend owned a convenience store in the late 1980’s.
She said that all ME store owners had a ‘special room’ with contraband - mostly cigarettes- that they hadn’t paid taxes on and were selling at a discount.
How these ilk come into OUR country, uninvited, and commit crimes with virtually no punishment escapes me.
People on food stamps should only be allowed to buy bulk flour, sugar,and beans
Taters beans pasta and eggs are the sort of things they should pay for.
