The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman collided with a large merchant vessel Wednesday night in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea.
"The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Besiktas-M at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time, Feb. 12, while operating in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea," a statement from the U.S Navy's Sixth Fleet said.
The collision involved a rare collision of two large vessels as the 100,000-ton aircraft carrier collided with the 53,000-ton merchant vessel Besiktas-M, a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship.
There are no reports of injuries, nor is there flooding, aboard the carrier, which carries a crew of 5,000 sailors, and the incident is under investigation.

Looks like the Truman was either about to enter the Suez canal or had just exited..
Great! Now the chicoms know our Navy’s only weakness. Just sneak up on them with a giant container ship under the cover of night.
The ship’s motto is, “The buck stops here.” We’ll see.
at least it wasn’t a lighthouse
And vice versa!!
It’s THAT EASY to get that close to an aircraft carrier?!
I thought they were surrounded by ships of all sorts and defenses of all sorts.
That’s pretty scary!
Well, they paint those carriers gray. Totally camouflaged. They sneak right up on you and can startle you sometimes!
On the highest point of the ship a guy was yelling his name, lookout, lookout, lookout, lookout.
What is the sex, race, and sexual preference of Captain and officer of the deck.
“There are no reports of injuries, nor is there flooding, aboard the carrier, which carries a crew of 5,000 sailors, and the incident is under investigation.”
THAT is a miracle in and of itself! Woman Captain at the wheel? *SMIRK* ;)
Well, this is Embarrassing.
Is everyone alright on the aircraft carrier? The Captain? Is she OK?
And a career ends in an instant...better dust off that resume.
That's essentially a floating city.
And the smaller ship couldn't see them????
No way an aircraft carrier can change course fast enough to avoid a collision. It's on the other vessel to do so so I'm guessing it was deliberate.
If you’re thinking about a diversity hire for CO of a nuclear powered aircraft carrier … forget about it.
Yes. I’m a bit surprised that a Nimitz class carrier can transit the Suez, and perhaps that it would given the current yin yangs in the region. A ship transiting the Suez or Panama Canals is a sitting duck. Not that there is anyone in Egypt who would want to do us harm ....
VLCC’s can’t use the Suez and it’s been reported that the big shipping companies have been rerouting ships to avoid the Red Sea entirely.
Collisions between large ships are rare but they do happen, typically in narrow shipping channels approaching ports or maneuvering for docking or an anchorage. It’s all a question of which ship had the right of way, or suffered a loss of steering. Large ships aren’t supposed to run into bridges either, but that didn’t stop a freighter from producing the most spectacular accident in years in Baltimore not long ago.
Maneuvering into/out of the Suez Canal? Harbor pilots? Tugs?
Odd how all reports say the Carrier hit the merchant ship...but I’m guessing it was the other way around...if the carrier was anchored there is not much they could do...question is why was the merchant ship that close?
LOL
Was a woman driving it?
It will take a few days to sort out, but I expect to see some pictures of the damage to the ships in the next few days...
