The Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday, Feb. 9. While the Chiefs look become the first team in NFL history win a Super Bowl three-peat, the Eagles look to reclaim the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2018.
Before kickoff at the Superdome in New Orleans, Fox delivered all-star pregame ceremony that included Lady Gaga singing live from Bourbon Street and Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle delivering a special rendition of “America the Beautiful" inside the Superdome.
To perform the national anthem, the network tapped 7-time Grammy Award winner, Jon Batiste, a native of Metairie, Louisiana. Batiste's rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" immediately turned heads.
Fans loved it. One person posted, "Jon Batiste….. gave us the Louisiana rendition of the national anthem that we all needed. I love it." Another viewer gushed, "Jon Batiste is so damn talented."
One user on X wrote, "absolutely fantastic performance of the national anthem, Jon Batiste killed it." Another person posted, "As an on the record hater of the US national anthem you gotta hand it to Jon Batiste on that one. A+ anthem." One viewer added, "Jon Batiste just performed one of the most coolest, funkiest and laid-back National Anthem ever."
One man noted, "BEAUTIFUL!!! New Orleans singer Jon Batiste just NAILED the National Anthem. The entire stadium loved it. AMERICA IS BACK."

But it’s art. And performative art. You’ve got to give leeway for what the artist can do. Anybody expecting Jose Feliciano to sing it like a British drinking song (which is still the root of the “official” version) didn’t know Jose Feliciano. If you ain’t looking for a Latin sound don’t hire him.
And really, it’s America. We’ve got that whole first amendment freedom of expression thing going on. Not to mention being a place where multiple artistic styles run into each other and make new things.
Funny you picked the flag for this. Because there’s one official version of the flag NOW. But it’s changed many times over the years, and may change again soon. Plus of course there’s many many “artistic license” semi-flags being made all the time, especially in leap years when we have lots of people running for office putting “flag like suggestions” in their bumper stickers and lawn signs.
Thats right exactly like the flag.
There were many variations but only one is accepted now, there is no artistic license accepted as being official. No Picasso versions that include multi eyed square chickens. If I had several million followers that wouldnt make my groups triangular flag with the stars arranged in constellations acceptable as a stand in for the official American flag. I could hang it from my house, my fans could where it on their clothes, they could make it into a sail but, that wouldnt make it acceptable to run up the pole at our embassies or at the post office.
When performed as the national anthem it is to be performed as written.
An artist can come up with another rendition when performing it as part of their set if they wish provided they arent intentionally doing things that are disrespectful. Jimmy Hendricks famous performance at Woodstock was in the middle of his set and he wasnt opening for the night. Even if he did do it certain ways to evoke certain sounds as political commentary as some suggest it was within the framework of acceptable expression.
I dont just say that because I necessarily agree with liberal commentary on the nation some have assigned to his expression. In the late 80s I know it was common for KISS to stop in the middle of the show and do a speech about being patriotic and giving thanks for having the opportunity to be born Americans. During this time they played a version of the Star Spangled Banner in the background. No, there are no speeches or guitar solos the music as written but it wasnt being performed as the anthem so much as an artistic musical performance used as a backdrop.
Should Jimmy, KISS, or anyone else have done a similar performance intended to be the national anthem at the beginning of the show then it would have been disrespectful.
Remember back to Roseann Barr singing the national anthem? It wasnt actually her singing that was the problem. Shes a horrible singer and her voice probably did bother many people that think that the performance of national anthem is for their musical enjoyment, but thats not what its for or why its performed. No one had any reason to expect anything better if she had sung to the best of her ability, we all knew she had that harsh screechy voice and she never claimed to be competent singer. The undignified part came in when she decided to try to make a baseball joke by crotch grabbing and spitting immediately afterward. As far as the singing itself goes, it was her show producer/Padres investor being a disrespectful jackass for setting her up that way and the morons in the crowd that thought it was for their enjoyment booing her. Maybe she should have turned it down, maybe she should have said something before starting about her overall inability and experience as a musician.
Jose does claim to be able to sing and does present himself as a musician, there is no excuse for making it about himself or about how latin he is. Its not about him. He shouldnt have accepted if he wasnt willing to perform it properly.
Crating a “latin” version, a “black” version, or “zesty” version is in and of itself disrespectful. The national anthem is about unity, not about creating division as they intend it to be when they politicize it this way.
But that’s not true. MANY “versions” of the flag are accepted now. They’re all over political ads, “patriotic” product ads and everything else.
There is no real “as written” for the anthem. That’s the point you’re ignoring. Especially because “as written” it has a higher range than 90% of singers. Almost nobody can truly sing it “as written”. The first thing anybody has to do is figure out what they’re going to do with that range. So it’s modified from the jump.
There’s nothing disrespectful about playing the song to the best of one’s ability. And that might deviate very far from the fictional “as written” idea. But your best effort is ALWAYS respectful.
Rosanne wasn’t doing anything to the best of her ability. That’s what made it disrespectful.
Feliciano did it to the best of his ability. With his accent it was going to come out Latin tinged. So he played into the spin. It’s not creating division, it’s a reminder that America is a big place with lots of different people and subcultures. We’re a nation with 4 different major concepts of barbecue, 4 different names for basically the same cold cut sandwich, 3 words for fizzy drinks. We’re not a monoculture, never have been. So the demand that the national anthem be monolithic is silly, and disrespectful to the country. The anthem can flex, just everything else.
Not so fast...
Whitney Houston lifted her version from Sandy Patty, who sang the Star Spangled Banner at the Statue of Liberty Rededication event in 1986.

There is exactly one flag. Fabricating nonsense does change that.
Im ignoring you because we both know that youre being contradictory just to try to “win”. There is only one anthem and it has exactly one acceptable written form. The failure of your preferred performer to be able to do it doesnt mean it gets to be modified, maybe you should be listening to people that actually have the talent they claimed to have.
You know what is disrespectful? Attempting to claim to be the champion of the argument I was making just because you saw realized how asinine and indefensible your position was. A child playing a broken ukulele to the best of their ability is is respectful, hiring some incompetent musician to bastardize the piece just because you think they are super cool is never respectful not on your part for hiring them and knowing that they were going to do that and not respectful on the part of the musician to accept the role knowing they cant do it. Maybe your 600lb girlfriend with weak ankles is a very nice person but she will never be an olympic figure skater no matter how much you pay her or how much you think of her. You are being entirely disingenuous to try to equate your elevation of disrespectful professionals to my championing the efforts of either true professionals or the common mans effort.
That voice of Rosannes is her real voice. If you actually watched the clip you should be able to hear her speaking voice before she starts. That is not a voice she effects for the Rosanne character, that is her real. She has no place attempting to professionally sing and she didnt ever pretend to be able, she had to ask when she was supposed to start because she didnt even know. Without the antics she resorted to in an effort to recover the will of the crowd, her effort absolutely would have been preferable to someone intentionally screwing it up.
Which brings us back to Jose intentionally bastardizing the song. This is not about a little accent, this is about entirely playing a different song with the same lyrics and that is not the national anthem, its not a little spin, its a parody with enough of the original to make it recognizable. Whether he thought he was above the message of the message or was paid to politicize the message is of no relevance to this discussion as either way it was disrespectful.
I think your sudden adoption of a vision for a balkanized future nation while what Im taking as you inferring that Im actually just a racist is desperate enough that I think it indicates that Ive made my point sufficiently.
Thank you for your time.
Oh, ffs, I shouldnt have left the edit for this morning. Ill be right back....

There isn’t and I’m not. I’m pointing out REALITY. There are many many renditions of the flag. There are many many renditions of the anthem.
I’m not championing the argument you’re making, I’m pointing out it fallacies. And as for “asinine and indefensible” you’re the one who now feels the need to go to personal attacks. Which only happens when YOU no longer believe in your argument.
It’s Rosanne’s “real” stage voice. And that’s part of the problem. She approached it as a comedy routine. Which is innately disrespectful for anybody, more so when it’s her brand of comedy. She could have decided not to use her stage voice and actually try to sing it. And yeah her voice (on a technical level) is really not built for singing and it probably would have sounded terrible. But I can respect “I can’t sing but I’m trying” a lot more than “let’s make a comedy routine out of it”.
Jose did not bastardize it. He played it to the best of his ability. He just happened to understand that the “normal” way of performing it is not within the best of his ability. So he played it his way. And it sounds cool.
Nothing sudden about it. I’ve frequently talked about the fact that America is not a monoculture. Cause we’re not. Never have been. Dating back to the beginning when we had slave states and not slave states we’ve always had drastic cultural differences in America.
The only real point you’ve made is that you really like to make up a bunch of silly rules that seem to only exist so you can get mad.
Enjoy your pointless mad. Meanwhile I’ll enjoy very interesting and entertaining versions of the anthem.
