The Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday, Feb. 9. While the Chiefs look become the first team in NFL history win a Super Bowl three-peat, the Eagles look to reclaim the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2018.

Before kickoff at the Superdome in New Orleans, Fox delivered all-star pregame ceremony that included Lady Gaga singing live from Bourbon Street and Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle delivering a special rendition of “America the Beautiful" inside the Superdome.

To perform the national anthem, the network tapped 7-time Grammy Award winner, Jon Batiste, a native of Metairie, Louisiana. Batiste's rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" immediately turned heads.

Fans loved it. One person posted, "Jon Batiste….. gave us the Louisiana rendition of the national anthem that we all needed. I love it." Another viewer gushed, "Jon Batiste is so damn talented."

One user on X wrote, "absolutely fantastic performance of the national anthem, Jon Batiste killed it." Another person posted, "As an on the record hater of the US national anthem you gotta hand it to Jon Batiste on that one. A+ anthem." One viewer added, "Jon Batiste just performed one of the most coolest, funkiest and laid-back National Anthem ever."

One man noted, "BEAUTIFUL!!! New Orleans singer Jon Batiste just NAILED the National Anthem. The entire stadium loved it. AMERICA IS BACK."

Of course it’s not really “as written”. As written it’s a POEM not a song. A POEM that eventually got set to the rhythm of a British drinking song to become eventually (and not actually that long ago) as the national anthem.

It probably should be set to music now, and that music should be 12 bar blues based. 12 bar blues is the great American contribution to music. It’s the source of blues (obviously), jazz, rock and roll and even country. Using any one of those for the structure is way more American than a British drinking song.

"This is not the thoughtful argument you think it is but rather a lack of understanding of the terms used."

Well, once you've developed an understanding of the terms used, feel free to hit me up, and we can have a thoughtful argument.

MO, the National Anthem should be sung as traditionally sung...

100% agree. Not a song that needs the embellishment.

That commentary is the kind of stuff that passes with people who can’t find Chicago on a map.

That girl football player ad was the worst. I just marveled at her talent while the white clumsy clods watched her beautiful pirouettes. NOT!

The best ad of all was the clever and innovative ChatGPT ad in the second quarter. That really mesmerized me. I was amazed how few dots it took for the brain to perceive the correct image.

But, during the ad, I had NO IDEA what it was for, what it was promoting, or who sponsored it.

It was better than the Roseanne Barr version at a baseball game in 1990.

Singing the NA at the SB is a huge career boost.

Interestingly, to me at least, was the over/under prop bet for the national anthem this year was 120.5 seconds. Most were betting the “over” since Baptiste is a home town guy and does a slight piano intro. Low and behold the anthem took exactly 120 seconds!
Woolies win!

Starting from the era of the poem and social song there was a competition within our society as to what the national anthem should be as we had none.

Various elements preferred The Star Spangled Banner to others that were being used and pushed for its adoption.

A single standardized version of the song was written in 1917, no longer a drinking song nor random poem, defining a single official version from the variations that existed.

This single version as written was adopted in 1931 and performed as written. What types of music someone deems as “more American” is irrelevant as that is not the way it was written and adopted.

As someone else pointed out it was Jose Feliciano and/or handlers that decided that horsing around was acceptable in 68. Whether he had irreverent intent or engaged in intentional politicizing is also irrelevant as to what should be considered acceptable in the future and should not continue be tolerated.

I dont like the shade of red nor the shade of blue used on the American flag. I think the stars are too regulated and the rectangle is a lame shape for a flag. I find it ridiculous that the flag code seems to think that the American flag is cowardly and requires a night light to pamper it while those defending it around the world dont have proper pay, food, guaranteed adequate shelter, nor even their own nightlight for when its safe to use one.

You may have noticed that whether others agree or what my intent, or the intent of others whos opinion may be respected more, may be in regards to the flag, there is one single adopted version that is correct.
