Sovereign Wealth Fund: My Initial Opinion
FREEPe | 2/4/2025 | Me

Posted on 02/04/2025 7:50:07 AM PST by Recovering_Democrat

I see there is an idea being floated by President Trump regarding a "sovereign wealth fund" wherein taxpayer monies, controlled by a federal government entity, would be used to buy interests in private business.

Trump says maybe the SWF would invest in Tik Tok, and other companies.

Someone help me make sense of this: what is this if not socialism, or direct government control of what ought to be a private sector interest.

I don't like this idea.

People have never seen a government like this before.

It may not be a bad idea if we can make sure the feds are a quiet investor, that have absolutely no say or any sway.

We know that won’t happen, therefore it’s a terrible idea.

I don’t like it. It is socialism and a government takeover of private equity. It will be abused by someone in the future.

in order to build sovereign wealth, it must be taken from others.

perhaps a surtax on certain industries to build a fund... like oil revenue being taxed to clean up sites after the oil is removed...

Do we really want the Government to control the best propaganda voice ever? Why do you think the Chinese started it? And we are replacing the Chinese propaganda????

Money must be invested, but the next Demoncratic admin would squander it.

I favor the government keeping +1% of offshore oil revenue and dispersing it once a year to retirees.

Thinking a little differently this would not be terribly different than what we have today with the 401k system.

Most 401K accounts are dominated by Fortune 500 stocks and the companies managing the accounts are owned by Black Rock controlled companies.

So, in effect the countries wealth is under control of Black Rock and serves Black Rock’s interest.

Such a system will only increase the wealth and power of Black Rock unless some how the government manages to keep Black Rock out of the new fund.

But ultimately I believe they would work their way in to the system.

Exactly. It will become the private property of the Democrat party the next time the power transfers to them, which it will.

This nailed it. Unleash the autists on D.C. We are seeing how corrupt the slush-fund USAID is. This SWF would be something open and you can see where the investments are.

No offense to President Trump, but this may be one of the worst ideas to come out of Washington in my lifetime.

But can you avoid its eventual corruption?

That's the problem. When Democrats control it . . . well we know what will happen.

It’s a bad idea, it will become worse than Blackrock at pushing government social engineering.

It will also become like USA, a slush fund to give money to politicians family and friend and pet projects, Solyndra comes to mind.

Probably not while Trump is in office, but down the line. A almost guaranteed certainty.

I agree... But one thing I could see an advantage of with the fund is that it will actually “make money” instead of just throwing money away all the time. There is nothing in government that “makes money” at all right now, everything is a loss in administration costs alone. It might offset some costs...

But can you avoid its eventual corruption? I doubt it. The fund will eventually be used in a partisan way, to fund political initiatives and campaigns. i

Bad idea. I listened to Frank McCourt yesterday on Glenn Beck’s show. He’s creating a fund to purchase TikTok. Also doing some other things to give us back ownership of our information on-line...

Unless it is specifically mandated that interest or capital gains earned on these “public money” investments is to be returned to the taxpayers annually in the form of dividend payouts on Social Security Retirement accounts. I know. I can dream.
