The internet is once again going crazy with conspiracy theories after an image of a perfect 'square structure' was found on the surface of Mars.
So grab your tinfoil hats, as it's time to investigate further.
One of our closest planetary neighbours and likely the best contender to support human life in our solar system (after Earth, of course), Mars has long been a source of major fascination for humans.
Major Hollywood blockbusters have seen humanity colonise it, H.G. Wells made it the home of hostile invaders and Donald Trump has even promised to plant the US flag on it. There truly is no place like Mars.
Which is why any news or conspiracy theories about the planet instantly go viral.
The latest Mars news to capture our attention is the appearance of a mysterious square like structure discovered by NASA.
Images of the grey, almost too perfect 'object' began to do the rounds several days ago on social media, with Joe Rogan even weighing in with the comment: "This is f**king WILD."
Naturally the appearance of a structure which appears to be 'man-made' would send the internet into overdrive, with believers quick to use the image as proof of a long-lost alien civilisation.
Meanwhile the logical (or non-believers, depending on which side of the argument you fall on) will brush it off as an over-exaggeration.
What do we know about the Mars square structure?
First of all, the structure is actually very real - having been captured by NASA's Mars Orbiter Camera back in 2001. You can find a link to the fully zoomed out segment here.
What is it? (NASA) The image was taken from a tiny slice of a crator on the planet, with the square itself being found at the top.
So why are we all suddenly fascinated by the Mars square?
Now this isn't the first time we've been fascinated by a seemingly unnatural structure on the Red Planet, with internet sleuths claiming to have found everything from tunnels, faces and even Bigfoot knocking about in recent years.
This time it's the fact that many people are in disbelief that a near-perfect square shape could appear naturally and without the intervention of something (or someone).
But before you roll out the red carpet for aliens, it might be worth noting that straight lines aren't impossible in nature.
In fact, various replies to the original thread pointed out that natural wonders such as the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, the Eye of the Sahara and Turkey's 'Fairy Chimneys' could appear man-made to an alien visitor.
Regardless, the image has since come to the attention of resident Mars fanatic Elon Musk, who will no doubt be more than happy to send SpaceX there if he gets the chance.
He responded to Rogan's tweet: "We should send astronauts to Mars to investigate!"

Ping!.................
Yeah man. If Elon goes to Mars he’s gonna have to deal with the squares.
Ritz crackers on Mars.
That's true. And two straight lines that intersect in a perfect 90 degree angle probably aren't impossible in nature either.
While nothing is impossible, nature tends to favor round corners.
An almost right angle... in nature!
These guys would go nuts over a thin section containing plagioclase.
Do tell...
True. Yet the unfavorable still exists.
It’s impossible to make judgment on that without knowing the scale.
Is it a couple inches wide, or is it the size of Rhode Island.
It’d be nice if we could send astronauts to land near where the Mars Pathfinder landed so they could check out the Sphinx on Mars!

It’s not easy, in year 2025, to let myself get all carried away with something strange like this. Over the past few years, I have become very skeptical of anything presented for mass consumption. Haven’t many been saying how realistic AI can be these days? It’s hard to suspend my disbelief so quickly, as I did during my Art Bell radio show days.
Long live Hale-Bopp!
Not a square.
Just a corner.
I thought it looked like a Cadbury Chocolate drop.
NO WAY would Ritz crackers get there before saltines!! :)
Looks like something one might see in Utah
It’s the remains of John Carters vacation home.
I have some vintage Art Bell with “experts” describing the Cydonia Pyramid Complex on Mars. Very entertaining.
