What Coffee-Brewing Method Makes the Best-Tasting Cup?
the kitchn ^ | 2022 | Jill Waldbieser

It doesn’t take much digging through the vast array of coffee-making apparatuses, either at your local kitchen store or online, to get overwhelmed. There are drip machines, pod-machines, French presses — even this odd-looking contraption.

When selecting the best brewer for you, you’ll want to consider a variety of factors: How fast is it? How much cleanup is required? How much coffee does your household consume? And of course, there’s taste.

1) Aeropress
2) Drip Machine
3) Pourover
4) French Press
5) Moka Pot
6) Pod Machine

Yeah. Poor Gale. (Why did he give Walter the “Leaves Of Grass” book? I never did figure it out.)

I'm not a coffee "expert", but for me and daily home use:

Moccamaster, using a whole-bean grinder, is what I use and it makes my coffee as I like it...(drip coffee maker)

I think it was just the W.W. coincidence. And they both appreciated the sentiments expressed in “When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer.”

I agree percolator is the best. My aunt had an electric and bought Maxwell House. I was still the best coffee I ever had. I have a 4 cup stainless steel stovetop percolator. Garage sale find a couple of decades ago. It is almost as good. Easy to clean. I just make two cups, you need less grounds. Arabica is the only coffee I drink. Low acid and a nice fruity taste. You can find these small percolators on camping websites. I do put in a unbleached basket filter in each time.

Gene Eric nails it!
I’ve been using Bunn countertop drip machines for 50 years; used them in our restaurants, too.
Real key is that Stanley thermos...immediately after brewing, to keep from scorching that heavenly brew.

“At my first Thanksgiving as a host, I boiled the coffee for about 20 minutes in the stovetop Pyrex percolator, to make sure it was done.”

LOL...and how did that turn out?

Your Thanksgiving coffee story triggered a memory. I stayed at my college fraternity for my first Thanksgiving away from home (1969) along with a few other frat bothers. We all pitched into to make our first-ever Thanksgiving meal away from home. I decided I was in charge of making the homemade bread. Nobody told me you needed to let the dough rise to double in volume. I just popped the freshly made dough in the oven. You can imagine my chagrin when I opened the oven door expecting a nicely baked, aromatic loaf!

I see them at our local thrift store. I use a gas stove, know where right to set the heat and set the stove timer for 22 minutes. Heat right, time right, experiment til you get it just right. Mine was in a yard sale in a box of pots and pans , metal cooking stuff. I only wanted the percolator. Whole box was only 2.00 . Donated the rest to my local thrift store. Glass top was only plastic and cracked but you can get replacement glass tops.

... thermos...immediately after brewing ...

Yup! If that doesn't get done, we call it "going tar."

We use a percolator ... best coffee we’ve ever had.

We wanted to get away from plastics (drip/other methods) and go 100% stainless ... and, no more burnt (drip warmer) coffee.

Percolator coffee is STILL fresh tasting hours later.

Aeropress!

It's like a french press expresso machine with fewer working parts.

Best flavor ever.

3) Pourover

Not just a pourover but, specifically, a Chemex pourover.

Throw the coffee in the boiling water, stir and strain.
Camp fire coffee never did me wrong
