Some questions for the group. These questions came to me as I continually hear how the progressive/statist areas of the United States will not allow ICE to enter the public schools to pick up illegals.
Is the Department of Education the ultimate controlling authority of the public schools?
If they are the ultimate controlling authority, does that not make every public school in the nation a Federal building?
If they are Federal government buildings, can't ICE - being Federal - enter the Federal building?
Looking forward to hearing your answers.
The Department of Education does not control public schools.
However their funding (indirect through third parties like states or localities or non profits) can have the same effect—since schools like money.
Eliminate the department and the money and a lot of bad things stop happening.
DOE is not controlling authority.
Your local and state taxes pay for school construction and maintenance.
Feds have no say who may or may not enter buildings..
That’s correct.
You’re right.
The feds to not control most public schools. The local governments, be it city or state controls the schools.
The dept of ed is a commie organization that forces certain materials on the schools they need to teach or lose fed money.
The blue commie states will not let ICE in, it’s their policy. That policy could be handed down by the dept of education, since they are all in bed with one another anyway.
I believe the Feds can enter anywhere they want to. If state or local officials attempt to block the Feds, then the state or local officials are obstructing the Feds and I believe that may be a felony.
I don’t believe DOE is the “controlling entity” for schools across the country. But I believe the Federal Government has, over the years, tied federal monies (such as the highway funds) to a state’s “compliance” with Department of Education guidelines.
Such as what they tried to do with Common Core before it imploded for the farce it is.
I could be wrong on this, and if so, other more knowledgable Freepers will give the correct information.
Logging used to fund schools, particularly in rural areas. Clinton took care of that.
He made sure there was compensatory funding for a while so it wouldn’t dry up on his watch, but he cranked the valve. Siskiyou County in CA used to have something like 50 mills. I think there’s one peeler plant (plywood skins) in Yreka now.
Please correct...
I thought Trump’s EO merely removed an arbitrary ICE free zone around the schools and other places allowing them to get parent and child together or get a 14 yo gang member, though I doubt many of them are going to school. As far as I know, ICE has no desire to go into schools.
Right. But I believe the Federal government ties things like highway funds to a state’s compliance with various “guidelines”.
That is, it lets the fig leaf of “state’s rights” stay in place, so you are free to do what your state wants, but when millions of dollars of federal monies are granted or denied on those choices...it isn’t really a choice for many areas.
So far correct responses. Yes they have control over money but the state gives money too. It’s more insidious when it comes to curriculum. Google Comon Core. IMO that’s when a lot of this started. And textbook control. Texas used to be a great source for textbooks but common core shys away from books. When common core started I was warning friends about this. Most fell on deaf ears. We started homeschooling in 1993. I dubbed it “the counter culture of the 90’s” on this forum long ago. Trump can take away a lot of the money and he can eliminate the DOE. But states will hang onto their system and curriculum directors. Even our smaller town as a curriculum director. They can control and introduce what they want. It will be a battle in the blue states for sure.
They don’t control them but they control them. Most schools take Federal money and if they don’t tow the line the feds can take their money. It is the reason we have the schools we have today because the liberals pulled the strings.
Ask George Wallace..................
Ike sent troops in to open the doors to public schools. I would think that Trump can too.
They can't do much of anything anything against determined Federal action other than slow walk info requests concerning precise whereabouts.
Barry Goldwater warned us about the scourge of highway funds being tied conditionally to compliance with federal “suggestions” in his seminal book “Conscience of A Conservative” back in 1962.
He dedicated a whole chapter to it.
No, not even close. Each state regulates its own schools, down to the most minute detail. The Federal government exercises control only by threat of controlling money; however, most states don't need that money to operate their schools.
In Texas, public schools control themselves. They are local government entities. The local police department doesn’t even have authority to step onto the campus unless they are called.
