The Garden Thread - February, 2025
February 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 02/01/2025 6:55:11 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

When I was about 12, Dad took ‘us kids’ for a drive in the country to buy some bunnies. The old lady who had the bunnies also had goats (20+ adults I would guess) .... it was spring time, so there were lots of kids. The goats were in a field where there was an old wood frame house that was falling down. One side of the house was totally down & the staircase was exposed. There were goats all over that house - on the steps, looking out of window & door frames & I think a couple were on the roof - quite the sight & I have never forgotten it.

BTW, my brothers & I begged for a baby goat (after the old lady let us hold a couple) but dad said ‘no’ & managed to mean it!

I had a friend that apparently was very annoyed with me in May every year because I was always furiously working in my yard. Key word is “had”. When she decided that she should decide what I was supposed to do with my time, it became apparent that we needed to part ways.

Good one! Looks about right! I looked out over my lawn today. It is a sodden mess with leaves scattered around that had blown out of the woods just before a recent snowfall, and now they are worked down into the grass, nasty and wet. If I leave the soggy leaves there much longer, they will make bare holes in the lawn. I would like to go out and rake them up, but it’s below freezing, with a wind chill.

I hate that—when the sun is shining brightly on a winter day but it’s bitter cold—you feel tricked! Every day now, I am reading the daily and the hour-by-hour temperature forecasts.

Bon! Glad you are staying safe out there (And hope you do not run out of air purifiers!)

Looks like the Bust of Pomona (Or Artimis, the huntress!)

LOL, a neighbor told me she had to drive 75 miles to find an air purifiers, they are sold out everywhere.

I am still getting poor air quality alerts, got two yesterday - so the air purifiers are still running on full blast. I suspect the winds we’ve had stir up the soot, particulates and ashes.

Changed out the filters after 30 days yesterday and they were black with ash and soot. I can only imagine what my lungs look like! And I’m not a smoker!

Love the ones with the animals, especially the one with the dog sliding along the ice and the cat that jumped through a wall of snow.

Very cute!

"Oh, what adorable puppies you have bred! A new crop for the spring!"

Thanks! We kept two from that litter; Comanche (Male) and Blackfoot. Both will be learning to hunt Black Bear this coming fall. The other four sold quickly to people we know and trust.

The female (Blackfoot) was one of the three I had to hand-feed every 2 hours when first born and their Mama was having a C-Section to deliver the rest of the puppies. It's not always Hearts & Flowers, but it IS always interesting!

Here they are, mostly grow. They have LOVELY accommodations in the barn, but they preferred sleeping in my Strawberry Bed earlier this Fall. Goofballs!

You’re the one that turned me on to the cottage cheese containers. I think I have about 100 of them by now, LOL! I can’t bring myself to recycle a single one, anymore! ;)

These are the things I do when growing Broccoli up here on The Frozen Tundra.

1. I agree with giving it adequate fertilizer. Anything ‘balanced’ works just fine. 10-10-10.

2. Cabbage Moths CAN be an issue. They are the small white or yellow ‘butterflies’ you’ll see flitting around any Brassica crops. They will lay their eggs there, and that’s why you sometimes get green worms in your Broccoli at harvest time. Row covers prevent this.

3. If we have a mild summer, and not too hot, I leave the plants alone after I harvest the main head, and it will produce side shoots all summer. The ‘Lieutenant’ brand has been really good for that.

4. Start seed in July and plant starts in early September for a second Fall crop. The Cabbage Moths will be gone by then, so my fall crops are usually pristine. (Worm free!)

The Cactus I have is actually a 'Thanksgiving' Cactus. Leaf shapes are different on the different varieties.

Bloom times can be tricky, too. Mine blooms around Thanksgiving, but then will also fully bloom again for me in late February. Mainly, because she is in a perfect spot in the house, in a south-facing window and I do fertilize her all year 'round.

They are a great size especially the northern climates, Plants can get a better head start before they go in the ground.
