The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
'Red Lion' in bloom, and that little 'Greenhouse' I made out of picture frames. E-6000 glue holds it together:

from a comment:
“plenty of fertilizer”
“catnip...nasty white moths”
“cut the broccoli off from the sides into the middle...not loose the whole plant”
In Sarasota County, Florida, I can get some broccoli, but only one small harvest as the season is short. I mainly grow tomatoes and herbs.
Squash can be productive, but it always gets attacked.
Bkmk
My brush cutting DR Trimmer died last year (long horrible story about sabotage and losing 600 bucks because of it) and by the time I got a new one all the field grass between my garden beds had grown to 5 feet tall.
Last weekend I broke out the new trimmer and whacked all that grass down.
I salvaged some smaller sized pallets whi h I cut down and put along the I new wage of my garden fence and which I am going to put my potted veggie plants on this year.
I cleaned out my greenhouse, built a new tabletop inside it for up-potting and seed start work.
I also put up another metal shelf with 4 shelves since the newer tabletop was more efficient space wise.
This weekend I am going to reseal the greenhouse plastic with repair tape over the softball sized hail holes that smacked it 2 yrs ago....the previous tape became brittle in the sun and has all flaked and blown away in the wind.
Upcoming project is new greenhouse kit being put up and then moving old greenhouse, later this year, over thr top of well head and expansion tank. That should do an even better job of ensuring no freeze damage to the expansion tank (I do have it wrapped up in wall insulation)
Plant life around here might be getting a fake Spring. We've been in the high 40s to mid 50s for almost a week, 1/2" of rain day before yesterday and 65, 70, 57, 57, 67, 51, 50 are the highs for the next several days. First week of Feb so we're sure to get more freezes. Glad I don't have fruit yet. They'd probably break dormancy.
Crazy Ozarks.
Got my neighbor's barn about cleaned up. Down to a few big items like wood stove, big deep freezer and some junk RV appliances. That and the old hay, some of which is still good and will go to the goats. The rest for tunnel mulch. Then I'm probably getting some lumber from him and can use it to frame tunnel end walls.
YEA!!!
It’s February.
Convenient for you that both Feb and March start on Saturdays.
Saves posting an extra thread.
My Christmas cacti did bloom some. They are on a bathroom windowsill without enough space. They are in 5-inch containers and I give them each a juice glass of water on the 10th, 20th and last day of the month poured down the inside of plastic holding the containers. They are now quite big. I gave them about two-thirds of a juice glass of water initially.
My orchid in the bathroom is doing well. It has a container with the usual mix set into another container. I keep water in the bottom of the second container. The inner container has holes.
This string of pearls is blooming - I've never had any luck with them except here. I got the plinth off of the street in front of a vacant house - I love repurposing things.
Happy February and Happy Gardening!
Is that a Christmas amaryllis? I inherited several after my mother died, ghosts of Christmases past! I’ve put them all in the garden and they bloom around March. My neighbor also dropped off about 10 amaryllis bulbs - huge ones that she dug up out of her garden and wanted gone. I’ve seen similar bulbs in the garden stores for around $20/each.
Love love love the puppies!!
I bought 200 feet of lime green .095” Weed Warrior trimmer line on clearance at Walmart for $8.
It seems quite durable.
I use old spools that I have drilled a two-hole path through. I then pass a 13” piece of trimer line through the path and knot it before putting on my Greenworks 40V trimmer, which I like very much.
A local Walmart had amaryllis bulbs on clearance after Christmas years back for $1 each.
I bought every one I thought would survive.
I can’t wait!
I need a new wheelbarrow.
This week coming is supposed to be 60’s in Salem, Virginia, so I hope to be out there cleaning up what I never finished in the fall.
We had a terrific cold spell, I hope that helped get rid of some of our garden pests.
My tomatoes and zucchinni did pretty bad last year but the peppers and eggplants were alright. Well, the peppers were stunted, actually, very small size in everything, but the eggplants exploded.
Here in the Roanoke area a lot of gardeners had a lot of trouble like that.
But, I spent the year from June through December having surgeries and recovering from surgeries, I probably didn’t give the plants and soil as much attention as they needed.
Here’s to a great new garden season!
I love those ears! Keep the photos coming as they grow up, if you can.
Terrific!! Had some good belly laughs with these!
Love your goaties! I see you have given them climbing toys!
What a great idea for strawberries! We have them growing wild into the lawn every summer — this is a wonderful way to corral them, yet let them do their trailing thing. Could put up a gutter along the wooden fence...
Great images.
I sent them to my kids who used to competitively swim.
